The presence of a Greek Orthodox church in St Augustine, Florida, is a wonderful and unique blend of history -- that of the first Greek Americans to arrive in the New World, and the rich tradition of the earliest and original Christian church. The history of Orthodox Christianity goes back to the Apostles of Jesus Christ. Though that first colony of Greeks, Minorcans and Italians ultimately failed, those that survived moved from New Smyrna north to St Augustine. Those Greek residents practiced their faith in various places, including the building that now houses the St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine in the old city area of St Augustine. As more Greeks moved to north Florida in the 1900’s, there was initially no formal Greek Orthodox church in St Augustine. However, as the number of Greek Orthodox families in the area grew, they organized and incorporated a Hellenic Society, which eventually raised enough money to purchase a small church in downtown St Augustine in 1976. Looking to the future, the parish purchased property on County Road 214, five miles west of downtown, and built a new church, social hall and classrooms in 2007.

The Hellenic Society of St. Augustine honored its founders at Holy Trinity. The society was founded in 1970 and was instrumental in starting Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Its members hosted the first "Greek Nite" in St. Augustine in 1973, purchased the original Holy Trinity Church (at 7 Waldo Street), and participated in opening of the new church doors twenty years ago. A memorial service was offered for the Hellenic Society founders, and coffee hour was sponsored by Mrs. Vasso Poulos.

2nd Sunday of Matthew (Call of the Disciples) Some thoughts.

Today’s Gospel reading, dear brothers and sisters, begins a new period of reflection on the start of Jesus’ ministry. It speaks about the call Christ made to the first four Disciples. As the Bible tells us, they were simple, humble, professional fishermen. Naturally, they would have had their own business plans and dreams for their lives. But the Lord calls them to leave all of that behind and devote themselves to something He shows them. Up to that moment, for the Disciples, the Lord was nothing more than their teacher. He had shown no sign of being the Messiah. Yet how did they respond to His call? They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

In another case, we see Christ in a similar way approach the Tax Collector Matthew and transform him into an Evangelist. At Jacob’s well, He meets the Samaritan woman and transforms her from a sinner into an Apostle. And on the road to Damascus, He meets the Apostle Paul and transforms him from a persecutor into a leading Apostle. Let us remember that amazing event. Paul—then Saul—was traveling to Damascus with permission from the political authorities of his region. He intended to arrest and persecute the early Christians. But on the way, the Lord appears to him in a vision and leaves him blind for two years. He is then baptized by a Disciple, Ananias, and is reborn—transformed into the Apostle to the Nations.

It is the faith of the Church that the Lord calls all of us. We are all called. We are all part of His plan—the plan of salvation. The Evangelist John, in Revelation, reminds us: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me.” Christ does not break down the door of our soul. He knocks gently, like a kind visitor. If the soul opens, then He will enter.

Today, the Lord finds many ways to meet us and call us—sometimes through a blessing, sometimes through a difficulty, and sometimes through a word we hear in church or even from a brother or a stranger whom God “accidentally” places before us.
How many times unexpected events happen to us. How many times we make plans for our future, for our life, and then something happens and everything is overturned. And we feel embarrassment, sadness, uncertainty, and darkness.
If in all this we do not recognize the presence of Christ, then the Divine Visitor of the soul will leave. We do not know if or when He will return.

But if we have faith and see all this as a call from God, then the darkness we feel gives way to light. This faith is a small flame, like a candle. No matter how dark the room of the soul is, even the light of a single candle changes everything. This little light will help us find the door and open it. And then, brethren, let us have no doubt: our souls will be flooded with the light of Christ. Christ will come into us to offer what He has promised: “Come unto me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Amen.

The St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine was represented by Executive Director Carl R. Hollister for the 2026 St. Augustine Mayor’s luncheon.

This year the intimate gathering hosted the Ambassador from Spain top the United States Ángeles Moreno Bau. The luncheon highlighted the rich history of St. Augustine being the longest continuously function European city in the United States. Invitations for the luncheon were limited to the institutions and organizations that have preserved their history in St. Augustine and continue to share and enhance the social fabric of northeastern Florida society and the million plus visitors annually.

In English: Roseate Spoonbills.
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? (Mt, 6:26)
