Illinois will officially recognize July 25 as Emmett Till Day under a new law signed by Gov. JB Pritzker, creating a statewide day of reflection honoring Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till‑Mobley. Pritzker signed the measure July 23 at Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, the site of Till’s open‑casket funeral.

Till was born July 25, 1941, in Chicago, and was killed Aug. 28, 1955, in Money, Mississippi, while visiting relatives. His killing helped galvanize the Civil Rights Movement and remains a defining chapter in the nation’s history of racial violence.
