Before Memorial Day, there was Decoration Day.
Many Americans were never taught that one of the earliest known Memorial Day observances was led by formerly enslaved Black Americans in Charleston in 1865.
After the Civil War, Black residents discovered Union soldiers buried in a mass grave at a former Confederate prison camp. They carefully reburied the soldiers, decorated the graves with flowers, and gathered in remembrance with songs, prayers, and honor.
Long before Memorial Day became a national tradition, Black Americans were already showing the country what it meant to decorate the graves of the fallen with dignity, gratitude, and love.
Today, we honor all who gave their lives in service to this country.
May we never forget the sacrifices made, or the people who made sure those sacrifices were remembered.
