Why did “the woman with the issue” believe if she could touch the hem of Jesus’s garment that she would be healed? She had faith, but there’s something else so profound and prophetic.
The “hem of His garment” was not just cloth.
In Jewish culture, the hem (fringe) of a rabbi’s garment contained tassels called tzitzit.
God commanded them in:
• Numbers 15:38–39
• Deuteronomy 22:12
These tassels were reminders of God’s commandments and covenant. Faithful Jewish men wore them on the corners of their garments.
So when the woman reached for the hem, she was actually reaching for the tassel of His garment.
There is a prophecy in Malachi about the Messiah:
“The Sun of Righteousness shall arise
with healing in His wings.”
“But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture.”
📖 Malachi 4:2
The Hebrew word translated “wings” (kanaph) can also mean:
corner / edge / hem of a garment.
So many Jewish teachers understood this prophecy to mean:
Healing would be found in the Messiah’s garment.
That means this woman believed something incredible.
She wasn’t randomly grabbing fabric.
She believed:
Jesus was the Messiah.
And that healing was in His hem.
❤️🙌🏼 So when she reached for His garment, she was declaring by faith, Jesus, You are the Messiah!
And Jesus responded:
“Daughter, your faith has made you well.”
📖 Luke 8:48
When she touched His garment, power flowed from Him instantly.
Her body was healed.
Her suffering ended.
Her faith was honored.
Sometimes faith looks like crawling through the dust and dirt just to reach Jesus. Are you desperate for Him today?
God honors desperate faith.
If you need healing today…
reach for Him.
There is still healing in His wings.
“And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”
Luke 8:43-48
There is still healing in His wings.
