A week after nature provided us with a chance to pause and revel in the beauty of a fresh blanket of snow, Old Whalers’ looks forward to welcoming everyone back to worship tomorrow, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m. Rev. Nancy Remkus’s sermon, “You Can’t Stay on the Mountain,” involves the Transfiguration of Jesus, when the disciples experience a moment of clarity and awe on the mountaintop but are quickly called back down into ordinary life. It reflects on how faith is not meant to remain in moments of inspiration alone, but is lived out in the everyday work of presence, compassion and justice. Connecting the biblical story with Black History month and the witness of Martin Luther King Jr., we’re reminded that seeing the vision is not the end of the journey. The mountain reveals what is possible; the walk back down is where faith becomes real. After the service, all are invited to enjoy a hot cup of coffee and light refreshments in the social hall.

For the safety of all, Old Whalers’ worship service on Sunday, February 8, has been cancelled because of icy road and walkway conditions, as well as extremely low wind-chill values. We look forward to seeing everyone next week, Sunday, February 15. If you’d planned to bring a box of cereal (or anything else) for the Sag Harbor Community Food Pantry, we will gladly collect it then—or on any other Sunday. Meanwhile, please stay safe and warm!

All are welcome to join in celebrating the second Sunday of Advent this week, December 7, when the Candle of Peace will be lit in the Advent Wreath. The morning’s message will remind us that peace grows in community, in the relationships we nurture and the ways we show up for one another, and that belonging, connection and shared life are what can truly change us. Rev. Nancy Remkus preaching. Worship at 10 a.m., followed by a time of fellowship at 11. 44 Union Street.
