Here is a day-by-day schedule of the main pujas and observances during Diwali 2025:
Day 1: Dhanteras / Dhanvantari Puja (Saturday, October 18)
Significance: Marks the beginning of Diwali. It is considered an auspicious day to purchase gold, silver, or new utensils.
Puja: Worshippers honor Goddess Lakshmi, Bhagwan Dhanvantari, and Dev Kuber to invite wealth and prosperity.
Dhanvantari Puja is a ritual performed to seek the blessings of Bhagwan Dhanvantari, the divine physician and Bhagwan of Ayurveda. He is considered an avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu and is worshipped for good health, healing, and longevity.
Day 2: Yama Deepam / Narak Chaturdashi / Choti Diwali / Hanuman Jayanti (Sunday, October 19)
Significance: Also known as Choti Diwali, this day commemorates Bhagwan Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura.
Puja: An early morning oil bath (Abhyang Snan) is a significant ritual.
Yama Puja: Place the four wicks in the diya and fill it with mustard or sesame oil. Light the lamp with all four wicks. Place the lit lamp with the flame facing south, the direction associated with Dev Yama. This is the only time a lamp is traditionally placed facing south.
Yama Mantra to perform puja properly:
मृत्युना पाशदण्डाभ्यां कालेन श्यामया सह ।
त्रयोदश्यां दीपदानात् सूर्यजः प्रीयतां मम ॥
Mṛtyunā pāśadaṇḍābhyāṃ kālena śyāmayā saha,
Trayodaśyāṃ dīpadānāt sūryajaḥ prīyatāṃ mama.
Translation: "On the thirteenth day (Trayodashi), I offer this lamp to the son of the Sun god (Yama), so that he may protect me from the noose of death and bless me with well-being."
Day 3: Lakshmi Puja (Monday, October 20)
Significance: The most important day of the festival, when diyas (oil lamps) are lit to invite Goddess Lakshmi into the home.
Puja:
The main puja is dedicated to Maa Lakshmi, Bhagwan Ganesha, and Dev Kuber. It is traditionally performed in the evening during the Pradosh Kaal, which begins at sunset.
Day 4: Govardhan Puja (Tuesday, October 21)
Significance: Celebrates Bhagwan Krishna, who lifted the Govardhan Hill to protect the villagers from a flood caused by Dev Indra. In some southern regions, this day is celebrated as Bali Pratipada.
Puja: Devotees build a small hill of food to offer to Bhagwan Krishna.
Day 5: Bhai Dooj (Wednesday, October 22)
Significance: This day celebrates the loving bond between a brother and sister.
Puja: Sisters perform a puja and pray for the long life and well-being of their brothers.
