Part 1- A global vigil and pilgrimage of solidarity and pressing for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza- About 9 or 10 UU’s participated from Sacramento and Stockton to peacefully and reflectively walk and visit six churches. At each church we stopped and either a reverend or pastor spoke. Some of these were Christian Palestinian leaders. We ended up in the Capitol Park Rose Garden with an informative display and Salmud, which is Palestinian hospitality. We were greeted with flavorful tangerines and delicious pistachio dessert at the end of our pilgrimage.

At this final stop, a Christian pastor spoke for a while, and there is video of part of that. Then a Christian Palestinian woman from Sacramento who has relatives in Gaza spoke. Her extended family members were sheltering in the oldest church in Gaza, the 1700 year old heritage site, St. Porphyrius Christian church as well. It was completely destroyed by a bomb(s) and her relatives were sleeping there as a shelter. Her relatives were among others who were either killed or injured. Some even died of minor injuries, but there was no medicine to treat them so they died of an otherwise treatable infections because of the lack of medical supplies and care. The poster shows some of her relatives in better times.

“Like several of you on my friend list, I often feel demoralized. Ignored. Deeply saddened by the apathy and silence at the cruelty we see unfolding. But at the end of most days I feel satisfied. Because I can live with my conscience. And as I get older I am realizing just how much this matters. Even if I am a lone voice in the wilderness, that voice will echo back to me. And when I hear it, I feel the power of a million voices”

This vigil, open to all, is to honor the spiritual work toward ending the violence. We are calling for a permanent ceasefire and end to the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza, a release of all hostages/prisoners, humanitarian aid, and an accountability process that is not rooted in revenge. We deeply honor the worth and dignity of all Palestinians and all Israelis.

We aim to be present with one another and deepen our attention to the crises in Gaza as Unitarian Universalists. We are mindful of the deep and complex roots in the minds and hearts of Westerners.

Join us as we grieve, rage, learn, and find solace together. The vigil will be held for 45 minutes, with a 30 minute facilitated breakout session for those who wish to connect more intentionally.
