“I Am the Vine” is the final message in the series of I Am statements by Pastor Chris Milbrath. Jesus stated, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
- John 15:5
Pastor Chris also reminded us to tune in and position ourselves to hear God’s voice in our lives.

Scripture: John 15:1-11

Fill-In’s
- Christian life is not RANDOM growth. The Father is ACTIVELY involved in the care of every true branch.
- Fruitless branches are not just struggling - they are DISCONNECTED.
- Pruning is not PUNISHMENT.
- God REMOVES what has no life. God CLEANS what does have life.
- Jesus is not saying there are PERFECT branches and STRUGGLING branches.
- He is saying there are LIVING branches and LIFELESS ones.
- “Apart from Me you can do NOTHING.”
- It is a promise that the disciple whose life is saturated with Christ will pray in ALIGNMENT with Christ.
- This passage on pruning, abiding, obedience and fruit is not leading to DRUDGERY. It is leading to fullness of JOY.

2. The path to God is no longer a LAW.
3. The path is a PERSON.
4. He does not say: “I TEACH the truth.” He says: ‘I AM the truth.”
5. He does not say: “I GIVE life.” He says: “I AM the life.”

“I Am the Good Shepherd”

Of the 7 wonderful “I Am’s,” perhaps Jesus as the “Good Shepherd” is the most personal and intimate. Sheep will die without a shepherd and Jesus knows that we need Him guiding our lives just as much.

Scripture - John 10:1-6 - The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

Fill-ins:
A Good Shepherd
1. KNOWS his flock.
2. NURTURES his flock.
3. SACRIFICES for his flock.

Applications:
1. Jesus wants us to recognize His voice so clearly, that we will not confuse it with the noise of other voices around us and respond by obeying His loving leading.
2. Jesus is always with us, everywhere we go, always wanting to feed us truth and help us grow. Tune in to Him.
3. Beware of false shepherds out there. They will deceive you if you let them.

John recounts seven different “I Am” statements to stress the deity of Christ. Jesus made these statements to illustrate His power over life and death and His relationship with the Father.

I Am
1. The Bread of Life
2. The Good Shepard
3. The Light of the World
4. The Door
5. The Way, the Truth, and the Life
6. The Resurrection and the Life
7. The True Vine

On February 15th, Pastor Chris started this series off with “I Am the Bread of Life.” On February 22nd, Pastor Mark comes back to give the message, “I Am the Good Shepard.”

Today is the first in a series of 7 I Am statements of Jesus. Today we begin with “I Am the Bread of Life.”

Scripture:
John 6:28-35
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

Fill-In’s:
The crowd moves from seeking BREAD to seeking MERIT.
The human instinct is not ATHEISM, it is SELF-SALVATION.
Faith is not effort FOR GOD, but TRUST in Christ.
Jesus: BELIEVE —> UNDERSTAND
Crowd: SEE —> BELIEVE
Bread is no longer WHAT, it is WHO.
They want endless PROVISION, not eternal TRANSFORMATION.
He replaces all FALSE SOURCES of life.

“Parable of the Talents” - Matthew 25:14-30

14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’
21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’
23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ . . .

Takeaways and Fill-In’s:
This is not about OWNERSHIP, it’s about STEWARDSHIP.
The servants are not judged on how much they received, but on what they DID WITH IT.
Faithfulness is ACTIVE obedience, not PASSIVE belief.
“Nothing is more injurious to God than to imagine Him HARSH and CRUEL.” - John Calvin
This 3rd servant isn’t condemned for losing money; he’s condemned for FEARFUL INACTIVITY.
FAITHFULNESS > GIFTEDNESS.
Fear is not HUMILITY.
INACTIVITY is disobedience.
The reward is deeper PARTICIPATION with Christ.

INSTALLATION OF CHRIS MILBRATH

We praise God, recognizing His call on Chris Milbrath to serve as Pastor of CCC. We affirm that the church belongs to Jesus Christ, who continues to lead His people by calling pastors to shepherd, teach, and care for His flock. Today’s service is not the beginning of something new, but the joyful recognition of what God has already been doing among us and of what Jesus will continue to do in and through this congregation.

•••

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Ephesians 4:11–13

•••

We give thanks for Pastor Steve Duyst, Pastor of Community Life at Tulare Community Church and representative of our denomination, the Alliance of Reformed Churches, who officiated Pastor Chris’ installation.
