Raven Rock Reunion 2024

Raven Rock Reunion 2024 Maybe some year we can have a reunion of staff, campers, and friends of the former Raven Rock Lutheran Camp...on the mountain!

Meanwhile, share your photos and memories.

Great news for Heroes Ridge at Raven Rock:

Operation Second Chance CEO Cindy McGrew has prevailed through many frustrating challenges and delays, and the long-planned indoor riding arena is finally on the way becoming a reality!

This ensure that equine therapy and other outdoor activities will not be hampered by weather for visiting wounded veterans and their families and caregivers. But it will also make large group events more possible.

So sorry that our hoped-for reunion still isn't happening. The planned indoor arena on the mountain keeps getting stalled by zoning...so we have not been able to know when construction would occur. Also, planners have been hit with emergency situations, including my daughter's having a medical/neurological event last August that required months of hospitalization and rehab before coming home. She is still unable to walk independently or have much control of her hands, but is working hard to try to recover skills.

We can keep this page open, in hopes that there might be a chance someday for the reunion we would love to have. Feel free to share your photos and memories.

The following video, which just came out, gives you a better picture of the service and ministry that is still happening on the mountain. You will recognize some of the buildings and scenery.

Many of you knew - or at least met - Bill Schiebel, who worked at Raven Rock for many years, including as site manager. He and his entire family were/are near and dear to the Sodowsky family. So it is with deep feelings that I share this message from his siblings that today was Bill's heavenly home-going.

IMPORTANT!
THERE WILL BE NO 2023 RETREAT!
We will try again for July 27, 2024.

Heroes Ridge at Raven Rock is trying to meet many (new?) regulations required by the township in order to expand and continue their work on the mountain. Projects begun had to be stopped until every jot and tittle is in order.
Pray that this can happen soon so that Heroes Ridge at Raven Rock can move forward... and that we can make the RRLC reunion a reality.

I should have posted months ago. Life got crazy, including 4 of my 5 siblings being hospitalized within a period of 6 months, and i lost track of this. So sorry! Edie Sodowsky

URGENT UPDATE. PLEASE PASS ON TO YOUR CONTACTS.

RAVEN ROCK REUNION 2022 must be postponed. The site will soon be renamed as RAVEN ROCK REUNION 2023.

NEW DATES: JULY 28-29, 2023. Please mark your calendar now and plan your next year's vacation accordingly.

The reunion will not be an annual event. We do not know if there will ever be another opportunity to meet on the mountain, so please come next year, if you can.

A family vacation around these dates gives you options for booking a nearby motel or B&B for the week and using other days for touring Gettysburg and other Civil War sites, visiting the many museums or National Zoo in Washington, D.C., taking in Baltimore highlights like the National Aquarium and other inner harbor attractions, or hiking in nearby parks.

A 2023 reunion promises to be even better than what we were planning for this year. Y'all come!

FRIDAY FLASHBACK: Memories of Raven Rock

Today's flashback comes from Martha Steinbach (nee Schiebel), one of the members of the Reunion planning team.

"I seem to remember being in Elementary Camp in 3rd grade - which would’ve been the summer of 1983. I spent many weekends on the Mountain with my family working on various projects at the camp and hanging out with my besties - the Sodowskys (so I’m not exactly sure what year that all started).

"When I was old enough, I was a CIT (Counselor in Training) and a Dishwasher in the kitchen. I helped with both weeks of camp for adults with developmental disabilities, helping with crafts, singing, and teaching the Gospel. I enjoyed my summers as camper and counselor.

"Although I never learned to ski well, I remember cross country skiing experiences. I also never learned to ice skate well and vividly remember the white snowy banks of the pond that turned red from my skating experience gone wrong! I also remember the day my brother Bill caught the rare great black lab fish of the pond!

"Pockets the Clown, serenades of Pastor Lee Sodowsky (Director) humming and twisting his beard, stories of Berrington Bunny by Bear and Chubby Bunny competitions, historical hikes from Lee, numerous campfires and skits, building, painting, etc, watching my brother Bill ride the lawnmower, seeing Halley’s Comet with my grandfather (2nd time in his life!), special time with family and friends, and building my faith in Christ and sharing it with others are just some of my fondest memories at Raven Rock.

"I look forward to this reunion as Raven Rock is a huge part of my foundation of my life!"

Have Martha's memories triggered some of your own? Let's hear them!

THROWBACK THURSDAY
Remember the old train bell that was below the dining hall and summoned campers to meals? It moved - but only to the other side of the building. It cleaned up nicely, don'tyou think?

Do you have any special memories of the bell? Did you ever get to ring it?

Ask not "for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee." It's calling you to join us at the reunion.

PSST! PASS IT ON! There will be a campfire! Come join us August 19th and/or 20th!

"IT ONLY TAKES A SPARK, to get a fire glowing,
And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing.

That's how it is with God's love! Once you've experienced it, It's fresh like spring,
You want to sing. You want to PASS IT ON!"

Please...pass on this link to others who were at Raven Rock Lutheran Camp.
