To date, more than 25,000 Catholics and members of their families have been laid to rest in the 18.37 peaceful acres of St. Mary’s Cemetery was purchased in 1863 by Father Martin Dowling, pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Port Chester. The cemetery was a private burial ground for Catholics before the purchase. The earliest recorded burial is of John Miley in 1854, the year the parish was estab

lished. Permanent roadways were installed in 1927 and additional property was added in 1945 and 1947. To accommodate a growing need, beautiful communal mausoleums were constructed, beginning in 1971. Expansion and new construction took place in several phases through 2005. There are two soaring chapel-like crypt rooms with comfortable seating, flower stands and stained glass windows that honor Our Lady of Mercy, the Infant Jesus and the Resurrection. The main floor of the mausoleum features a bronze crucifix sculpted by Enrico Arrighini from the image of Christ on the Shroud of Turin. Among the many unique headstones in the cemetery, 500 were carved by Luigi Del Bianco, chief carver of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. As a result of the Making All Things New pastoral planning process, Our Lady of Mercy merged with three other parishes in Port Chester to become St. Mary’s Cemetery was transferred to the Trustees of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the entity that has been responsible for cemeteries of the Archdiocese of New York since 1848. They are interred in graves, private family and community mausoleum crypts and in cremation niches located within the community mausoleums. Although the grave areas have been fully developed and are limited, there is an excellent selection of crypts and cremation niches in the well-lit, tastefully decorated community mausoleums. If ground burial is your family’s preference – space is available at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Dear Beloved in Christ,

Today we stand in wonder before the most sublime mystery of our faith — the Most Holy Trinity — as Holy Mother Church bids us lift our hearts in adoration to the One God who is, in the eternal depths of His being, a communion of Three Divine Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, distinct yet inseparable, co-equal and co-eternal, bound in a love so infinite and so perfect that it is itself a Person. It was the Father who so loved the world that He sent His only-begotten Son (John 3:16), that same eternal Word made flesh who walked among us, suffered, died, and rose for our redemption, and who breathed upon His apostles the gift of the Holy Spirit — the Paraclete, the Lord and Giver of Life, who even now dwells within our souls through sanctifying grace, making us temples of the living God.

On this most solemn day, and always, may peace be with you...

The Feast Day of Saint Philip Neri, Patron Saint of Rome

Dear Beloved in Christ,

Today our Church rejoices on a radiant soul who abandoned worldly comfort to walk the streets of Rome as a lay apostle, spending thirteen selfless years in prayer and service before embracing the priesthood with all the fire of his great heart. Philip was no ordinary saint — he was the beloved Patron of Joy, a mystic who levitated during Mass and a confessor of uncanny spiritual insight who pierced the deepest illusions of the soul with a knowing smile, for he believed that cheerfulness strengthens the heart and makes us persevere in a good life. At a moment when Rome was morally adrift and the Church embattled by the Reformation, it was Philip's luminous, laughing, unconquerable joy — not condemnation — that drew sinners and cardinals alike back toward holiness, and his tender genius that gave birth to the Congregation of the Oratory, that beautiful community gathered not in dread but in love, in music, in prayer, and in the sheer delight of God's presence. And so, as we honor this Saint who showed us that holiness and humor can dwell together in one consecrated heart, let us ask him to pray for us, that we too might carry joy as our apostolate, and love as our only weapon.

May peace be with you, beloved...

Pentecost Sunday: The Culmination of the Easter Season

We warmly invite you to watch the Pentecost Sunday Mass from Saint Patrick's Cathedral: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=repNtCrPx1s

Dear Beloved in Christ,

Today we celebrate the great and glorious feast of Pentecost — the fiftieth and final day of the Easter season, the very birthday of the Holy Church, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostles gathered in the Upper Room as tongues of fire, filling them with divine courage, wisdom, and the sacred gift of tongues, that all nations might hear and receive the Good News of our Risen Lord. This is the fulfillment of Christ’s tender promise — ‘I will not leave you orphans’ — the great outpouring of the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity upon the Church, who came to dwell within the hearts of the faithful in a new and abiding way, sanctifying, guiding, and animating the Body of Christ on earth until the end of ages.

On this day we wear red, the color of fire and blood, honoring both the Spirit's flame and the martyrs who bore witness to that same Spirit; we renew our openness to His seven gifts — wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord — and we rejoice that through Baptism and Confirmation, that same fire lives within each of us, making us temples of the living God, co-heirs with Christ, and missionaries of His inexhaustible love, sent forth as the Apostles were sent, into a world aching for peace.

May peace be upon you, beloved, this holy and radiant day — the peace of the Spirit who hovered over the waters at creation and who even now hovers over your heart, whispering tenderly that you are loved, you are chosen, and you are never alone.

The Feast Day of Saint John I, Pope and Martyr

Dear Beloved in Christ,

On this week we hold tenderly in our hearts Pope Saint John I, a gentle Tuscan soul who ascended to the Chair of Peter in 523, already fragile in body yet immense in spirit. He was a man of letters and prayer, a scholar and shepherd, who had spent his life in the Roman clergy as its oracle and model — and when the hour of trial came, he did not flinch. Compelled against his will by the A***n king Theodoric, he traveled as an old man to Constantinople and became the first pope ever to set foot in that golden city, where he was received with the reverence owed to a successor of Peter himself. He stood faithfully between a king and an emperor, not for glory, but to protect his flock — and upon his return, that same king, consumed by suspicion and pride, cast him into a dark prison at Ravenna, where this holy pope died of neglect and suffering on May 18, 526. His body was carried home to Rome and laid to rest in the Basilica of Saint Peter — and the Church, recognizing that he had given his very life for the unity of the Faith and the defense of Christ's divinity, enrolled him among her martyrs. In Saint John we see the face of a servant who asked for no crown yet received one.

May peace be with you, today and always...

Commemorating Archbishop Hicks' First 100 Days!

May 17th marked Ronald Hicks' my first 100 days as Archbishop of New York. He spoke to The Good Newsroom about the joyful occasion: "I continue to feel happy, grateful, and truly blessed to serve God’s people across the Archdiocese of New York." On that day, he also met with the FDNY's Holy Name Society. "It was an honor to gather today as a family of faith and a family of God with the Fire Department....To our firefighters and your families who give your lives so generously in service to others, we are deeply grateful for you and continue to keep you in our prayers. As I begin day 101 tomorrow, I entrust my life to God, trusting that even in moments of uncertainty, He is always with us and listens when we pray."

The Golden Jubilee Mass of His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B12-zvL4W7M

Today we paused with full and grateful hearts to honor a shepherd of extraordinary gifts, a priest of uncommon joy, and a prince of the Church whose love for his people has never dimmed: His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, on the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the sacred priesthood. On this golden Jubilee, we thank Cardinal Dolan for the Masses offered, the confessions heard, the dying comforted, and the faithful confirmed in their hope. We thank him for a priesthood lived fully, generously, and joyfully every single day for fifty years. And we pray that Almighty God, who began this good work in him, will continue to bless, sustain, and delight in His faithful servant for many years to come. Ad multos annos, Your Eminence. The Church is richer, and the world is brighter, because you said yes.

The Feast Day of Saints Nereus and Achilleus

Dear Beloved in Christ,

Today, on May 12th, our Holy Mother Church lifts her gaze with tender gratitude toward two radiant souls — Saints Nereus and Achilleus — Roman soldiers who, in the early dawn of Christian faith, laid down their swords and took up the cross. These brave men served in the imperial household, likely attending to the martyr Saint Flavia Domitilla, and it was through her witness, and through the transforming grace of Baptism, that their hearts were set ablaze. They renounced the instruments of violence, refused to carry them ever again, and — with a courage that can only come from love — embraced their martyrdom around the close of the first century, giving their very lives so that Christ might be glorified. Their ancient tomb on the Ardeatine Way in Rome, and the beautiful basilica erected in their honor, have drawn pilgrims for nearly two thousand years, a testament to how deeply the Church holds them in her heart.

May peace be with you, dear Beloved — the peace that the world cannot give, the peace that Nereus and Achilleus found not in the shadow of empire, but in the light of the Risen Lord, and may that same peace guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, now and always...
