“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23–24 KJV

This kind of prayer takes honesty.

Because it’s easy to focus on everybody else. What they’re doing wrong. What they need to fix. What they should be doing differently.

But David said, “Search me.”

That’s a hard prayer to really mean sometimes.

Because when God starts dealing with our hearts, He’ll point out things we got comfortable with. Attitudes we excused. Things we stopped thinking twice about.

Not to push us away, but to draw us closer to Him.

I think being set apart starts there. Letting God deal with us first.

“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?”
Romans 8:31 KJV

Life can make you feel outnumbered sometimes.

By stress. By fear. By opinions. By situations that seem bigger than you are.

And if you focus on all of that long enough, it’s easy to start feeling defeated before you’ve even taken another step forward.

This verse doesn’t say life won’t be hard. It doesn’t say people won’t come against you or that you’ll never face difficult seasons.

It just reminds you that none of those things are bigger than God.

If God is for you, you are not standing alone in what you’re facing.

Not in the waiting. Not in the uncertainty. Not in the battles nobody else sees.

And there’s something comforting about knowing that the same God who called you is also the One walking with you through it.

“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
Matthew 16:26 KJV

Jesus asks this question because He knows how easy it is to chase the wrong things.

It’s easy to spend so much time building a life that looks good on the outside that we forget to take care of what matters most.

A relationship with Him. Time in His Word. A heart that stays close to God.

The world will always offer something else to run after. More money. More attention. More success. More distractions.

But none of it is worth losing your walk with God over.

And the truth is, the things of this world won’t last forever anyway.

But your soul will.

That’s why this verse matters so much. It reminds us to stop living only for temporary things and start investing in the things that actually last.

Because at the end of the day, being close to Jesus will always matter more than having everything else.
