These last few weeks we have been learning about how God speaks!
Work together this week on memorizing this verse!
Come near to God, and he will come near to you.
James 4:8a (NIrV)
Here are some activities and conversation starters to extend the lessons at home. Have fun!
INTERACTIVE PRAYER
Crown and Oil
SUPPLIES: cooking oil of any kind, a glass of water, paper, scissors, tape, crayons, stickers or glitter and glue (optional)
You’ll make paper crowns to wear as a reminder that God chose David to be king. God saw David’s heart and God sees our hearts too. You can color the crowns or use stickers or glitter and glue. Then you will create a visual reminder of how our prayers rise to God and He hears us. Prepare a glass of water and have a small amount of cooking oil ready to pour into the water. Just like God chose David for a special purpose, you have a special purpose that God has in store for you as well! You may not grow up to be a king/queen, but God can and will use you in big ways. God looks at your heart and invites you to live with and for Him.
When your child is finished with the crown, pour the oil into the water. As you watch the reaction of the oil and water, remind your child to think about the oil that was used to anoint David as king. As you watch the oil float to the top of the water, let it be a reminder of how our prayers rise to God. Spend time praying together as a family.
HANDS ON
Apple Stamp Hearts
SUPPLIES: whole apple, paring knife, cutting board, paint (preferably red), bowl or plate for paint, blank paper, markers
Your child has been learning that God sees our hearts and does not look at just the outer appearance like people do. He sees all the good qualities we have on the inside. God helps kids accomplish the purpose He has for them, the way he used David’s gifts and passion to accomplish his purpose as a great king for Israel.
Cut an apple in half and hold it up to show your child that it looks like a heart shape. Dip half the apple, cut side down, into a bowl of paint and use it as a stamp on blank paper. It will look like a heart on the paper. This apple stamp made a heart shape! While the paint dries, let’s think of some things God sees when He looks inside your heart. I see kindness, a leader, a good friend, gentleness, and love for God. What do you think God sees when He looks at your heart? Once the paint is dry, use markers to write (or have your child write if she is able) the words God sees when He looks into her heart, such as kindness, leader, and love for God.
It’s amazing to think God knows what’s going on inside our minds and our hearts. He knows us better than anyone else does because He made us, and He loves us so much.
WONDER ABOUT IT!
What is one thing you’re curious about from this week’s part of God’s big story?
How can you live differently or respond to God with what you’re learning?
FAMILY CONVERSATIONS
Families, use this to prompt conversations at the table, in the car, and anywhere else your family experiences life together.
Why do you think God looks at the hearts of people?
What qualities do you think God noticed in David that made him the right person to be the next king?
What should we look at when we think about other people so that we see them the way God does?
What does spending time with God look like for you?
