The world is a better place because she lived in it. We rejoice in her victory over sin and death through Christ, our Lord. Please remember Mary's family and all who loved her dearly. We'll see her again one fine day.

It is with sadness we announce the death of Mary Smith Alderman on May 16, 2026. Mary was married to her lifelong love, McKiver Alderman, for 70 years when he predeceased her in 2023.
She is survived by her children, Lauren Alderman Coe, David Alderman, Bradley and Teresa Alderman, and Melanie and James Bodenhamer. Her Grandchildren, the Joys of her life, Jonathan Middleton, Allyson and Jon Lessard, Benjamin and Taylor Alderman, Nathan and Kaitlyn Alderman, and Mattie and Colby Duggins. The Great Grandchildren who light up her life, Lilly and Flint Lessard, Lainey and
Emmett Alderman and Jameson Duggins. Her sisters-in-law, Bonnie Smith, Barbara Smith, and Linda Alderman. She loved being Aunt Mary to a large delegation of nieces and nephews.
Mary was born on November 4, 1934, in Stokes County to William Andrew and Mattie Moss Smith. She was the 8th of their 11 children: Drudy (and Della) Smith, Jonah (and Margie) Smith, Elmer (and Olene) Smith, Owen (and Dovie) Smith, Thelma (and Ernest) Shelton, Stella (and Bruce) Sprinkle, Marjorie (and Jack) Herndon, Gray (and Ruth) Smith, Wallace (and Barbara) Smith, and Gerald (and Bonnie) Smith. Mary became the last surviving member of their family when her younger brother Gray predeceased her by only 4 days.
McKiver and Mary were devoted lifetime members of Jefferson Christian Church, where they raised their family. Mary was an active volunteer for Jefferson, serving as a Sunday School teacher, singing in the Choir, and in other capacities wherever needed.
Mary was employed by and retired from Sara Lee Hosiery in Product Development in August 1994. She served on the Board of Directors of HanesBrands Credit Union. Following her retirement, Mary took great pride in attending to the care of her five grandchildren all the while convincing them broccoli was the new candy and nothing else in their lives is as important as knowing God.
As the Grands grew older, Mary began to volunteer helping elderly folks in our community. She soon became affiliated with Blessed Assurance, a company that does the same. One of her favorite clients, Mrs. Sullivan, shared these words of wisdom with Mary, which she now shares with you: “I will do the best I can, where I am, and with what I have for Jesus’ sake today.”
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 7:00 pm at Jefferson Christian Church, with visitation following the service.
Slate Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Mary Smith Alderman. Online condolences may be offered at www.slatefh.com.

A few years ago, we partnered with some other churches and church planting organizations to help plant Canvas Church in Goldsboro, NC. Their story illustrates how churches like ours can reach people who are far from God with a new church for people who don't like church. So many have come to love Jesus, and His church through their efforts. Please pray for Canvas Church and Kevin McNeil and the team in Goldsboro.
