This is a prayer liturgy from Newman Church in Rumford, RI on the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Join us in person at Newman Church, or join the stream any time starting at 8:45 a.m. and running until 12:15 p.m.

Tomorrow, on September 11, Newman Church will host a community prayer service of bell ringing and prayers for peace to mark the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. This event changed the world, and the lives of all those who lived through that day. The Newman Church sanctuary doors will open at 8:45 a.m. and will be open for all people to drop-in for any amount of time until the service ends at 12:15 p.m. We will be ringing the historic bells in the church bell tower at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., and 10:03 a.m., to mark the times when four planes crashed. We'll also ring the church bells at noon in coordination with the Rhode Island State Council of Churches and dozens of Rhode Island congregations as a unified show of our prayers, hope, and action to bring about peace in our world.

On the 25th year anniversary of the September 11th attacks, churches around Rhode Island are coordinating to ring bells and open doors to pray together. At a vigil offered the first night of the attack, the Rev. Charles Ortman reminded his congregation that, despite the great evil they experienced that day, the “universe is still filled with unlimited possibilities for goodness.”

This summer I’ve been bicycling our area with the “church on wheels” to connect with our community and neighbors in new ways, and to embody that we are a church committed to worship and service!

But I’ve also learned that Newman Church has been “the church on wheels” before! In 1993, to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the founding of Rehoboth and Newman Church, church members loaded church pews onto a large flatbed truck and celebrated 350 years of being a “church on the move” in the community

We can see church members of today among the “church on wheels”! This event from 1993 is a great reminder that a church comes alive through the actions of people at work in the world, putting the love and service of Jesus into practice.

The sign on the float in 1993 said “rooted in history, growing for the future.” It’s a good metaphor for today, too, as we grow toward the fifth century of Newman Church.

As we enter a new school year, and new program year at Newman Church, we’re excited for the beginning of church school on September 13th. And for the next seven weeks in worship we’ll celebrate a season of blessings! During the “Heart to Heart” in each service we’ll offer a collective blessing to something wonderful in our midst:

August 30: Blessing of Students, Backpacks, and CWS School Supplies
September 6: Blessing of the Three Sisters Garden
September 13: Blessing of the Newman Church Choir Stoles
September 20: Blessing of the New Members
September 27: Blessing of the Southern New England Conference, United Church of Christ
October 4: Blessing of the Animals (St. Francis Day)
October 11: Blessing of DiNitto Baptism
