Sin always demands payment. That's the sobering reality at the heart of this week's message.

In 1 Chronicles 21, David sinned by taking a prideful census of Israel — and the consequences were devastating. A plague. 70,000 lives. But what stands out isn't just the sin or the judgment. It's what David did next. When he was offered the threshing floor for free, David refused. His response cuts right to the heart of genuine worship: "I will not present burnt offerings that have cost me nothing" (1 Chronicles 21:24).

David refused to worship casually. He understood something we easily forget — true, God-honoring worship requires sacrifice.

We can't purchase our salvation. Jesus already paid that price in full. But that doesn't mean following Him is free. Romans 12:1 calls us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices — holy and pleasing to God. That is our spiritual act of worship. Following Jesus costs the flesh. He is absolutely worth it — but it will hurt.

So the question worth sitting with is this: Are you taking from the Lord without living a life of sacrifice for Him?

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is the reason so many of us enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted.

As we remember their courage and selflessness, we’re also reminded of the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13
