Good morning friends! In place of an in-person service, I invite you to read Matthew 4:12-23 and engage with the devotional below as well as the services mentioned at the end. May God’s presence be with you this morning:
In our scripture passage, Jesus is fulfilling the words of the prophet Isaiah, to become the light of salvation that has dawned on the people living in darkness. He goes and gathers his first disciples, fishermen who “left their nets and followed him.” Jesus’ ministry was just beginning, but his light was already bright enough for his first disciples to see and follow. In our world today, how can we see the light of Christ and follow? How can we be the light of Christ for others to follow? During times where we may feel pressured to live in darkness and look for the differences between us, may we find the strength to look for the light of Christ in each other, the love that brings us together. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote in his book Strength to Love, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” When we are met with darkness, let us turn to the light of Christ so that we may love our neighbor, feed the hungry, tend to the sick, and work for justice in our world. We sing in the hymn, Here I Am, Lord number 593 in the United Methodist Hymnal, we sing proclamations of a just God “I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?” Who will be the ones that share the light of Christ? Who will show love to God’s people? “Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.” God gives us the strength to follow the light and leads us in love so that others may find the light. When the darkness of night takes hold, the voice of God remains steadfast, calling us to bring the light of Christ into the world, so will we listen?
