We recently celebrated the Feast of St. Barbara by making watercolor cherry blossom ornaments for our Parish. Thank you to Elizabeth Keefner for her artistic guidance in this project. We also shared the history of St. Barbara before Mass.
We celebrated the second Sunday of Advent and discussed preparations for our Christmas program.

It’s the week of the angels! Historically, the week leading up to the Feast of the Archangels on September 29 and the Guardian Angels on October 2nd was an incredibly prayerful and celebratory time for Catholics to reflect on the role of the angels in their lives while showing their gratitude through prayer and recommitting to holiness. This is a practice we should still do today. In our overly materialistic world, it's easy to write off the angels as medieval superstition or something that isn't important in our faith. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
St. John Chrysostom said that when Mass starts, legions of angels surround the altar “in an attitude that is comparable to warriors in the presence of their king.” St. Brigid thought that the cherubim made “the air vibrate with unspeakable sounds and songs” during the Consecration. St. Josemaria Escriva would greet the guardian angel of every person he would meet before shaking their hand. Pope Leo XIII composed the St. Michael Prayer after receiving a terrifying vision of the future of the Church - entrusting the Church to her guardian St. Michael. Most importantly, Jesus himself had deep friendship with the angels who ministered to him in his moments of suffering.

This week of the angels, let's follow the saints and recommit to growing deeper in our love and gratitude for the angels in our lives.

The Lenten season is upon us. Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday, March 2. Ash Wednesday falls six and a half weeks before Easter, beginning the Lenten season of preparation for Christ's resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Though Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, receiving ashes is a universal practice among Christians to begin their Lenten journeys. Ash Wednesday awakens us to Jesus' entry into the desert preceding his death. During the Lenten season, we must prepare our hearts for his resurrection.

We receive ashes on our forehead at the Ash Wednesday Mass. This is done in the sign of the cross. The ashes symbolize our mortality. They are a physical reminder that our bodies will decay, but our souls will live on in eternal life. The ashes used on Ash Wednesday come from ashes gathered after burning the blessed palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday. This year's ashes come from the palm leaves from 2021.

As we prepare for Lent , let us begin a renewed commitment to prayer:

"God, may Your light guide my day, and Your spirit bring me peace, Amen."

Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday, March 2 and marks the beginning of the Lenten season. It is a day of fasting and abstinence. One full meal and two smaller meals are allowed with the expectation that we abstain from eating meat on this day. Age requirements for fasting are 18-59 years; abstaining from eating meat applies to those 14 years and older. The Church recognizes medical conditions that do not allow these obligatory practices.

Ash Wednesday Mass will be this Wednesday, March 2 at 6PM at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tonopah. There will not be a Mass at St. Barbara Catholic Mission in Round Mountain.
