The festive season is upon us. One thing we sometimes hear this time of year is “keep Christ in Christmas.” Why should Jesus receive more notice now than other times? A question just as important is, where does the Bible say anything about a yearly celebration of His birth? Please come and hear a sermon with Power Point at the Round Lake Beach Church of Christ, 1132 Hainesville Rd., Round Lake Beach, across from the golf course, on Sunday, December 11. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. The lesson will begin around 11:00 a.m. The collection basket is passed around for the members of the church, not the visitors. We hope to see you!

In Acts 19 Paul asked twelve men, "Into what then were you baptized?" They then came to understand that they needed to be baptized again! In our lesson this coming Lord’s day we will show why these men needed to be baptized again in order to be saved. In the process of our study Ephesians 2:8,9 will be shown to be in harmony with Acts 19:1-5. Please come and be a part of this study at the Round Lake Beach Church of Christ, 1132 Hainesville Rd., Round Lake Beach, across from the golf course, on Sunday, September 18. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. The lesson will begin around 11:00 a.m. The collection basket is passed around for the members of the church, not the visitors. We hope to see you!

John 3:16 is probably the best known verse in the Bible. It speaks of the great plan of God to save mankind from their sins. It is even seen on banners at football games and is often misunderstood by religious people today. Please come and hear an examination of this beautiful verse at the Round Lake Beach Church of Christ, 1132 Hainesville Rd., Round Lake Beach, across from the golf course, on Sunday, June 19. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. The lesson will begin around 11:00 a.m. The collection basket is passed around for the members of the church, not the visitors. We hope to see you!

The Christian and Old Testament Law
Joe R. Price

We affirm that we live under the authority of Jesus Christ today, and that His authority is revealed in His gospel, the New Testament (Matt. 28:18-20; Rom. 1:16). Many who believe Jesus is the Christ, appeal to and practice portions of the law given through Moses. By doing so they believe they are giving honor to God. This is a brief review of why such an approach of honoring God does not harmonize with the word of Christ.

When given a choice between Moses, Elijah (the prophets) and Jesus, we are to “hear Him” in all things (Matt. 17:5; Acts 3:22; Heb. 1:2). If we listen to Moses and the prophets instead of or before Jesus, then we are not honoring the Father and the Son.

The apostles of Christ, inspired by the Holy Spirit, were guided into “all truth”. So, when we hear and receive them, we hear and receive Christ (Jno. 16:12-15; 13:20; 1 Cor. 2:10-13; 2 Tim. 3:16-17). If we listen to Moses and the prophets instead of or before Jesus, then we are not honoring the Spirit of God by whom the gospel of Christ was given.

Disciples of Christ are under a fundamental responsibility to do everything “in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Col. 3:17). What we say and do must have His permission; it must be by His authority as revealed in the New Testament.

The question is occasionally asked if we believe we are still under Torah law. An analysis of the Bible on this topic leads us to conclude “we” (Christians) were never under Torah law. While the things written in the Old Testament are for our learning, they are not our authoritative source for what we practice as Christians (Rom. 15:4).

The law God gave Israel through Moses was called the “book of the covenant” and the “book of the law” (Exo. 24:7; Deut. 31:24-26). It included the Ten Commandments and was God’s covenant with the nation of Israel:
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write these words, for according to the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel. So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments. (Exo. 34:27-28)
This is crucial to recognize and acknowledge: this covenant was a national law for a temporary period of time. It was never given as a universal law for all nations in perpetuity. Hence, on the mount of transfiguration, the Father said to “hear” His Son (Matt. 17:5).

When Moses spoke to the Israelites as they were about to enter the Promised Land, he acknowledged God had made a covenant with them:
And Moses called all Israel, and said to them: “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe them. The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, all of us who are alive (Deut. 5:1-3).
The Law of Moses (also called the “law of the Lord”, 2 Chrn. 30:15-16; 31:3-4), with its laws of circumcision, feast days, dietary regulations, animal sacrifices, etc. were bound upon the nation of Israel. The law helped to set apart Israel from the other nations as God’s special or chosen people (Exo. 19:5-6). This law also taught Israel about sin and its sinfulness (Rom. 3:19-20; 7:7; Gal. 3:22).

Jesus fulfilled the purposes and promises of the old law (Matt. 5:17-18; Rom. 10:4; Acts 3:20-26). The apostle Paul clearly said we are not under the old covenant. “Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor” (Gal. 3:24-25). The “faith” of which he spoke is the gospel of Christ, and the “tutor” is “the law” of Moses (see Gal. 1:11, 23; 2:19; Jude 3). The Law of Moses was “nailed to the cross”, no longer to be bound on the Jews as a law from God. That law was not to be pressed upon Gentiles as necessary for their approval before God (Col. 2:14-17). This was one of the major doctrinal battles in the early church, as seen in Acts 15 as well as Galatians 2. (The books of Romans, Galatians and Hebrews deal extensively with this subject, as well as portions of other NT epistles.) In fact, the apostle said Christians who tried to be justified before God by keeping the law of Moses were “estranged from Christ” and “fallen from grace” (Gal. 5:3-4).

Christians rely on the New Testament of Christ for our authority in all things. The tabernacle, gifts and sacrifices of the old covenant were “the copy and shadow of the heavenly things” (Heb. 8:1-5). When compared to the tabernacle and its service (which was given to Moses on Mt. Sinai), Christ “has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is the Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises” (Heb. 8:4-6). We ought not to go back to an inferior ministry that could never take away sins (Heb. 10:1-4). Instead, we “hear” Jesus and find in Him the grace that saves us from our sins (Heb. 2:9-10; 5:8-9; Titus 3:4-7).

Since we are not under the Old Testament law, we do not celebrate the feasts associated with it. The apostle Paul said, “let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ” (Col. 2:16-17; Heb. 10:1). The gospel of Christ does not bind these shadows on Christians today, and neither do we.

Christians believe the Old Testament is inspired by God, giving us wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ (2 Tim. 2:15). It does not have binding authority over anyone today. We are answerable to Jesus; we must “hear Him”.

Many who claim to be Christians are still guided by the laws of the Old Testament, where blood sacrifices, burnt offering and worshipping on the Sabbath are no longer commanded.

People cannot know their duty to God unless they know the differences between the Old and the New Testaments, and what laws are binding.

We invite you to find out on Sunday, May 1, at the Round Lake Beach Church of Christ at 10:30 a.m. We look forward to seeing you there!

Why Be a Christian?
Kyle Campbell
Most people think if you have money, you have all the advantages in life — the disciples thought the same way. But Jesus showed that riches can be a distinct disadvantage (Mark 10:23-31). We want to show that the real advantages in this life are to those who are following Christ:
• A hope of God. We believe we are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). We will give an account to our Creator (2 Corinthians 5:10). Believing that man evolved from animals (organic evolution) does not give man much dignity.
• An inward satisfaction. There is a personal satisfaction in knowing that we please God. God wants all to honor His Son (John 5:22-23), and we do this by becoming His children. There is something very gratifying in the inner-self in knowing that we please our Creator.
• The forgiveness of sins. Someone has to receive remission of sins before they can become a Christian. Many will die with their sins unforgiven, but this is sadly unnecessary (John 8:24). Christians continue to have the blessings of forgiveness (Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:9-2:2).
• The blessing of prayer. There is help from God in your time of need (Hebrews 4:16; 10:21-22). Only a Christian has access to the Father (Ephesians 2:18). Words cannot describe the satisfaction, nor can it be exhausted with words. Prayer produces a tremendous inner joy.
• The blessing to society. Christians are salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16). Employers have learned that Christians make better employees (Colossians 3:22-25). If you were hiring someone, would you rather have a Christian or a carnal person working for you?
• The ability to cope with hardships. There is a certain amount of adversity and hardship that comes to everyone, but a Christian can have an inward peace (Philippians 4:6-7), knowing that this test of faith will turn out great benefits (Romans 5:3-4; 1 Peter 1:6-9).
• Membership in a local congregation. In the local church we study God’s word and increase our knowledge of His will. We have encouragement toward a common goal (Hebrews 10:24). There are some members in the local churches who are hypocrites, but also there are some of the best people in the world.
• The betterment of the family. A Christian makes a better husband, wife, father, or mother (Ephesians 5:22-31). Generally, children of godly parents are better children (Ephesians 6:1). No greater heritage can be passed down.
• The heavenly reward. This is also called eternal life. The reward will far outweigh the price. But there is a great day of wrath coming when those who are against God will be destroyed (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). We are to fear because the fear of the Lord causes you to depart from evil.
There are multiple blessings to being a Christian. It pays to be a Christian. But none of these blessings can be yours unless you become a Christian. Let us who are Christians remain steadfast so that we can continue to enjoy the blessings.

The Bible tells us of the great flood that left all dead but the few on Noah’s ark. The varied and many ancient tablets – from different areas of the ancient Middle East – testify to the great flood connected with the Bible. The similarities between the bible narrative and these accounts are too close to be accidental. Please come and hear truths from times past with important information for today. It is to be at the Round Lake Beach Church of Christ, 1132 Hainesville Rd., Round Lake Beach, across from the golf course, on Sunday, March 20th. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. The lesson will begin around 11:00 a.m. The collection basket is passed around for the members of the church, not the visitors. We hope to see you!

When Lost People Can’t Be Saved
Kyle Campbell

Preachers often say that everyone can be saved. We want people to investigate the claims of scripture, compare it to their lives, and “… rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm” (Joel 2:13). But there are three cases where someone who’s lost can’t possibly be saved. And knowing these may help you make the correct eternal choices.
First, lost people cannot be saved if they harden their hearts and will not listen to the Bible. Matthew 13:14-15 says, “And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: ‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not perceive; For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them’” (Matthew 13:14-15). Pharaoh hardened his heart and refused to listen to God’s command to let His people go. This ultimately caused his destruction. The number one power you have is the power over your own heart. Don’t close it to God’s precepts.

Second, lost people cannot be saved if they die lost. At death our deeds are sealed. Paul said, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10). When the body ceases to live, you’ll then be responsible for what you’ve done in it. Furthermore, in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, Jesus taught that those in torment cannot cross over to Abraham’s bosom or Paradise (Luke 16:23-26).

Third, lost people cannot be saved if they are lost when Christ returns. Jesus will come again and “we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:17). This verse is speaking of the righteous who are alive when Christ returns. But what will happen to the wicked? Paul again instructs Christ as coming “in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thessalonians 1:8).
A lot of people are going to be lost (Matthew 7:13-14). But there’s no good reason for anyone to be punished for eternity (Mark 9:44, 46, 48). Stop resisting the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51) and listen to the words of Jesus and He will become the author of your eternal salvation (Hebrews 2:14-15). (via The Gospel Teacher,12/27/2020)

CHRIST'S OBEDIENCE TO THE FATHER WAS LOVE, NOT LEGALISM
BY JOE R. PRICE

30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here (John 14:30–31, NKJV).

Jesus was about to be arrested, tried, and condemned to death by crucifixion. We marvel at God’s love for us by which He “gave His only begotten Son” for the redemption of sinners (John 3:16; 1 John 3:16; 4:8-10). Today’s passage adds another element to God’s love for us, the Son’s love for the Father. Jesus’s death on the cross was not only the great expression of divine love for humanity but also the great expression of His obedient love for His Father (Rom. 5:8; John 6:38; 10:18). Christ’s love for the Father compelled Him to do the Father’s will, becoming “obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Phil. 2:8). His sacrificial, selfless obedience makes Him the Exemplar of love. You see, previously in today’s passage, Jesus had told His apostles, “If you love Me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Jesus holds His disciples to the same standard He followed, to express our love for Him through faithful obedience. We ought not to view obedience as a legalistic approach to discipleship but as love’s full measure of devotion. As John wrote, “My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and truth” (1 John 3:18). It is no wonder that Jesus saves those who obey Him (Heb. 5:8-9). Today and hereafter, “arise, let us go from here” and in love obey the Father and the Son. SWORD TIPS #2367 (NOVEMBER 12, 2021)

Numbers, Life and Death
Bill Crews

43, 54, 85, 50, 63, 57, 71, 65, 65, 68, 25, 93, 37, 47, 49, 58, 64, 16, 19, 91 and 81. Can you guess the source or significance of this collection of numbers? Each one is very much the number of a person. Each one represents the number of birthdays celebrated by an individual. Each one describes in years the life span of a real human being. They came from the obituary section of a Monday morning paper. These were the ages of the deceased. From 16 to 93! An average of 57! I grant that that average is below the life expectancies of both men and women, then and now, but they demonstrate well the fact that anyone can die at any age.

In view of the brevity and uncertainty of life, the certainty and finality of death, and the duration and nature of eternity (one heaven and one hell, forever), shouldn’t you start thinking about the condition and destiny of your soul — NOW? You are concerned about your mortal body; shouldn't you be even more concerned about your immortal soul? You are concerned about your physical life; shouldn’t you be more concerned about your spiritual life? Your are concerned about material things; shouldn’t you be more concerned about spiritual things? You are concerned about time; shouldn’t you be more concerned about eternity?

Every day that we live among men, we are asked, “How are you?” or “How are you feeling?” Hardly anyone asks, “How’s your soul?” We are body-conscious; we have physical health-awareness. But we are being foolish and careless if we are not primarily concerned about the spiritual condition of our never-ending souls. Have you been saved from your sins? Are you a Christian? Are you faithful to God? Do you have the approval of God? Do you enjoy the life and peace and hope that are in Christ? In the words of a grand old song:

"A charge to keep I have,
A God to glorify;
A never-dying soul to save,
And fit it for the sky.

Simon the sorcerer is an interesting Bible character, but not because he was a sorcerer. Simon, of Acts the eighth chapter, learned a number of things from God-fearing men he encountered. The knowledge he gained is also needed for those seeking a right relationship with God today. We hope that you will come and hear a lesson entitled, “Things That Simon Saw.” It is to be at the Round Lake Beach Church of Christ, 1132 Hainesville Rd., Round Lake Beach, across from the golf course, on Sunday, February 20th. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. The lesson will begin around 11:00 a.m. The collection basket is passed around for the members of the church, not the visitors. We hope to see you!
