| John 15:12-17 | God's plan for us is not to remain servants, but to become friends. This passage from Jesus' message to the disciples is quite radical. We think of our place in relation to God in a very dualistic way - humanity is evil, fallen, and unworthy while God is pure good, exalted, and holy. Perhaps some of this way of thinking is not what Jesus intended to teach us. Why else would he teach that we will see greater things than this - that we are the light shining as a city on a hill - that he will hide nothing from his disciples? After all, if we were meant to experience God, why would God design us so poorly for that very task? Perhaps we aren't as attuned to God's activity in the world because we have believed it to be impossible - yet with God, all things are possible.

| Matthew 15:10-20 | Jesus is teaching on the dietary laws and practices of Judaism. Many of the food laws served a good and practical purpose - making hygiene and food safety a concern. Yet Jesus makes a strong delineation between the external ritual and the internal state when it comes to spiritual growth. There is a lot of humor in this story, too! The food goes 'straight into the sewer' - he's equating that whole idea with 'rubbish.' There is a deeper spiritual truth in the practice of all religious 'law,' but if we are blind to such truth, the practice is as good as 'rubbish.' May your heart dwell on the truth Jesus displays, and bring forth good in the world.

| Isaiah 59:1-15 | God is very concerned with justice for the poor and oppressed. Today, much of the 'social justice' work in our country has been so politicized that it has prevented the cooperation of 'liberal' and 'conservative' congregations. If we continue to allow this, then we demonstrate that our political allegiances are more important to us than God's call. God is clear that this call to justice is the responsibility of all - regardless of class, race, status, income, nationality, etc. Every person with a heart drawn towards Jesus also has a heart drawn towards justice for the poor, oppressed, and marginalized. How will we work together to bring about a more just, equal, and Kingdom of God-like future?

| Luke 9:1-6 | Bringing the Good News is paired with the curing/healing of diseases. Just as we have a deep yearning for physical health/restoration, we also yearn for spiritual wholeness. There is a deep and abiding connection between our physical and spiritual/emotional selves in this life - even though much modern church language speaks of a sharp division between flesh and spirit. We hunger, thirst, injure, heal, and breathe on both levels. The physical is obvious, but awareness of the spiritual takes more awareness - and this may be what the disciples' activity meant to introduce people to. The Kingdom of God is not just a spiritual realm, but a tangible and physical reality for us to experience!

| Mark 2:23-28 | Jesus' defiance of Sabbath law was a serious offense in Judaism. There are laws in Deuteronomy that prescribe death as a proper punishment for breaking the Sabbath. In this one act, though, Jesus poses a question of any religious regulation - he is not interested in the 'what' but the 'why.' As we grow, it is good to be the little child who constantly asks 'why,' in search of a deeper grasp on reality and more knowledge. As we grow along our journey, we will likely come up against rules and regulations that we once thought could never be broken or questioned, and in order to keep growing we may have to move beyond them.

| Luke 7:43-45 | It is quite interesting to note that brain science has recently revealed that our brains often respond to the dictation of our hearts, and not the other way around. So, what is your heart full of? There is likely a mix of good and evil, positive and negative - therefore, it is the task of our spiritual practice to draw upon the good more often than the evil. Our thoughts are like water, and we must be mindful of which plot we are watering more often, because that is where the tree will take root. This spiritual work is difficult and also entirely up to you - nobody else can do it for you.
