ROSWELL, Ga. -- String lights and Tikki torches lit up the night for hundreds feasting and dancing at the Taste of the Nations Wednesday evening.
Some piled their plates high with savory foods such as Nigerian jollof rice, curry chicken with chickpeas, and Chinese pot-stickers. Others attacked the sweets such as dates, Pennsylvanian Dutch shoofly tarts, French macarons and ice cream pineapple and ginger ale punch.
“The Taste of the Nations gives people a chance to showcase their country,” said Navita Patton, the missions director at World Harvest Church. “It’s a way to connect people with different cultures, to fellowship, and to enjoy eating different foods. It’s an amazing experience!”
This year, Ernest Choi, his wife Sarah Weyl, and their daughter Emma brought something special to the banquet.
“We made a Korean tofu dish as a way to connect with our Korean roots,” Ernest said.
This is the second year the couple has attended the Taste of the Nations.
“The missions event definitely means a lot more this year after going to Africa,” Sarah said. “It’s really life-giving.”
Jackie Mason said she also made a Brazilian dish for the Taste.
“Well, I tried anyway,” she said, laughing.
Although she is not from Brazil, Jackie said she made the food to commemorate her recent mission trip there with Duedishar Jenkins and our very own Brazilian missionary, Isabel Johnson.
The Taste of the Nations began the first of four events at World Harvest Church geared to raise awareness, involvement, and resources for missions. The next events include the Nations Flag Walk on Sunday, October 31, A Night to Remember Testimonials on Wednesday, November 1 and finally the Missions Gala on Friday, November 5.
“God loves the nations of the world,” said Pastor Mirek Hufton in his message before the banquet. “We must never lose sight of the fact that the Holy Spirit has given us power out of Acts 1:8 to reach nations. It’s not just our city. It’s not just our country. It’s the world.”
