“Before surrendering my life, I was fully focused on the world and doing my best, trying to live up to a standard I don’t think I ever really understood. My life revolved around achievement and results. I’ve always loved my family, served my family, and tried my best to be a good person, but my measuring stick was how the world saw me, not how God saw me. It was a constant chase for the next ring, and the ring always moved.

Three years ago, God really started tapping me on the shoulder. At my first men’s meetup, I chose to sit at a table full of strangers. Looking back, God sent me to that table, and my faith journey began. I started reading the Bible for the first time, the Bible my mom gave me when I was seventeen. I’m 57. I began meeting regularly with Christian men who were also pursuing Jesus, and my life changed. Ann and I joined a community group with other believers who have helped us grow and learn.

I know who Jesus is, and I know who He wants me to be. I fail regularly, and God is faithful.

I want to thank my family. I want to thank my awesome wife and my kids, who encourage me and inspire me to follow Jesus; my parents, for showing us what love looks like; my siblings for being here; and my grandkids for stealing my heart. I want to thank my Northside family, our community group, all the guys I’ve been in men’s Bible study with, my awesome Puerto Rico team (sign up!), and my small group of guys, especially you, Bob. I told you guys yesterday I wouldn’t be up here without you, and I mean it.

Lastly, I want to thank Jesus for just being patient with me and being there when I finally turned and looked toward Him. I love Him for that. I have put my faith in Jesus. He is my Lord and Savior.”

Jesus is anything but safe, and that's a good thing.

Following Him challenges our comfort, our mislead ambition, our way of life, calling us into a Kingdom purpose greater than anything we could imagine.

What part of your life is still off limits?

Jesus doesn’t just want 80%. He wants all of it.

It can be easy to keep certain things behind a locked door, afraid of what might happen if we fully surrender them to Him. But there is freedom in opening every part of our lives to Jesus and holding nothing back.

What area of your life are you still keeping closed off?

“I hadn’t been on a mission trip in a long time but remembered that I aways came back feeling I received more than I gave. I was a bit of a sceptic of what to expect from a large organization like Send Relief… but looking back, it was the best mission experience of my life! The staff of Send Relief are so genuine in their love for Jesus and people, it was inspiring to hear their stories. Spending a week with a like-minded team was the start of some cherished relationships that I will never forget. We had team names and I was nicknamed “grandpa”, which added a lot of fun to the experience as we painted, played, and most importantly, shared Christ with people that needed some good news and hope. The people of PR were incredibly friendly and sincerely interested in why we were there, which made conversations easy and natural. Everywhere we went—whether bakeries, restaurants, homes we were painting, or out in the community—we heard stories and were able to share the grace, love, forgiveness, and hope of Christ with those who needed encouragement. I could genuinely feel I was right where God wanted me to be. If you want to feel like you are doing God’s will, sign up for a mission trip.”

“Going on the women’s mission trip to LA pushed me outside of my comfort zone in ways I didn’t expect. God used that discomfort to challenge the way I see people, to look beyond circumstances, choices, or assumptions and simply see the person He created and deeply loves. Through the people we met and the stories we heard, God reminded me of the hope we have in Jesus. I came home with a greater understanding of what it means to meet people with grace instead of judgment and with a deeper compassion for people whose stories may look very different from my own. I went hoping to love and serve others well, but God used the experience to grow something in me too, reminding me that Jesus is the hope we all need.”

What should we do when we know Jesus is able but doesn't answer?

Learning to live in the tension of sadness and brokenness while trusting God’s purpose is hard. But we can trust that He is at work, growing our faith for our good and His glory.

In hard seasons, Jesus is steadfast and He invites us to draw closer to Him.
