We’ve all heard the old saying, “No pain, No gain!” And a true saying it is! If you ever desire to be in shape physically and take care of your body, there is going to be pain associated with it. Your muscles will be sore; you will run out of breath; you will definitely sweat; you will have to make sacrifices in your diet; sometimes you will think you aren’t going to make it through it! To sum it up, there are some things that are going to hurt if we are to be physically healthy. Hey, the fact is, the truth hurts! But what is the alternative? Being overweight? Bad health? Suffering? No energy? No strength? Maybe…even a shortened life. But, if you are like most of us, we usually settle with our physical state and do nothing about our overall condition. We don’t like to hear how bad of shape we are in but at the end of the day, we know it’s the truth.
The above saying is almost exclusively used in connection with physical fitness but I believe it can also be applied spiritually. When we look at ourselves in light of God’s Word, sometimes it hurts! Just as we may look at ourselves in a mirror and be dissatisfied with what we see, we should also look in the mirror of the Bible and see ourselves as God sees us. YES, it’s painful! YES, it may be humbling or even humiliating, but in the end, it’s for our good!
Join us over the next few weeks at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church as we begin a short series on sermons on Sunday mornings entitled: “No Pain, No Gain.” We will be seeing ourselves in the light of God’s Word so that we can be what He would have us to be in Christ. Only then, will we have true joy!
