Background:
Israel was one nation with 12 tribes under King David and King Solomon. When Solomon died around 930 BC, the kingdom split over pride and power. The Southern Kingdom of Judah was ruled by King Rehoboam, a son of Solomon. Judah was made up of the tribes of Judah, the largest tribe, and Benjamin, the smallest tribe. The Levites or the priestly class were also part of Judah. The capital of Judah was at Jerusalem, where the Temple was located. The Temple was the proper place of worship according to God, and only the Priests of the Levitical class could lead worship. Judah was conquered by Babylon in 586 BC. After 70 years, the captives returned, rebuilt, and recovered. The Northern Kingdom of Israel was ruled by King Jeroboam, a rebellious servant of Solomon. Israel was populated by the other 10 tribes. Israel set up its capital at Samaria, but they had no Temple and no place of worship approved by God. They also had no Priests of the Levitical class to lead worship. This was not pleasing to God. Israel was conquered by Assyria in 586 BC and completely destroyed. They never completely recover. Israel and Judah are surrounded by enemies, but there is also animosity between the two kingdoms. Three of the countries surrounding them have common ancestors and should be "brothers."

This week:
Onto this scene, Amos appears. Amos was called by God to be a prophet to the nations. Amos is a sheep breeder from Tekoa, which is south of Jerusalem. Amos had no formal religious training, but God called him and equipped him. God's message, which he delivered, would please no one. Amos begins by warning each surrounding nation of the destruction God has planned for them. He also gives the reason for God's displeasure.

Sometimes it can be hard to apply Old Testament scripture to our lives. Here are some points to consider. God called an "unqualified" individual to do His work. When God calls us, we must say "Yes" and trust that He will lead us in what he has asked us to do. Sometimes we want to avenge some insult, big or small, from another. The scripture here makes it clear that God will judge and punish justly. God always keeps His promises. We may have to wait, but God will always do what he says He will do.

Review:
For forty days after His resurrection, Jesus appears to His disciples and prepares them for His final departure. He reminds them that everything that has happened is part of God's plan. Jesus tells them to stay together in Jerusalem until the power from on high is given to them. As He blessed them, He was carried up into Heaven. The disciples returned to Jerusalem as Jesus had commanded. They returned with joy and continued to worship Him. While they waited, they preached and taught others, not knowing how long they would have to wait.

This week:
Ten days after Jesus ascended into Heaven, the disciples gathered in Jerusalem. We don't know exactly where they were gathered, but it is a place open to the public. Suddenly, these disciples and all the others hear a sound like the rush of wind and see dancing flames descend upon the disciples' heads. The wind reminds them of the breath of God that brings new life. The fire does not burn but dances on their heads. God uses fire to light altars where sacrifices are offered to Him. God uses fire to purify by burning away the dross and the chaff. At that moment, the Holy Spirit descended on each of them and would remain in them and in all believers. They began to praise God in a language that all understood. The people in the crowd were from many different nations and spoke many different languages, but each understood what the disciples said. God had used languages to divide the people who disobeyed Him and built the Tower of Babel. Now God used languages to unite all those present. Peter dispels the notion that they are drunk. He repeats Joel's prophecy and points out that this is its fulfillment. Peter ends by reminding those present that if they call on the name of the Lord, they will be saved!

Review:
People pass by and remark about the beauty of the Temple. Jesus says that soon the Temple will be destroyed. Jesus warns the people to flee from Jerusalem before its destruction. This prophecy was fulfilled in 70 AD when the Romans devastated Jerusalem and took the Temple part stone by stone. Every Jew was either killed or captured.
Jesus then begins to speak about His return and the devastation that will precede it. Jesus makes it clear that there will be certain signs, such as wars between nations and natural disasters. He makes it clear that these are not the final indicators of His return. Jesus warns believers to always be ready for His return. Believers will be taken up with Jesus during the Rapture. There will be seven years of Tribulation with terrible calamities. At the end of those seven years, Jesus will return with His church, defeat His enemies, and bring God's Kingdom to earth. The exact timeline for these events is not known. Jesus warns us to be ready for His return. He warns us not to become focused on things of this world but on our Eternal Life to come.

This week:
Jesus continues to speak to the disciples about His return and the terrible events that will accompany it. He warns them to flee to the mountains. Jesus speaks of the disruption of the natural order. But Jesus also gives them hope, saying that redemption draws ever closer. He says that heaven and earth will pass away, but His Words will always remain. Jesus says to focus on heavenly things rather than earthly matters, and to always be ready for His return. Soon after this discourse, Jesus shares a last meal with His disciples.

After His resurrection, Jesus appears to His disciples and prepares them for His final departure.

Review:
Jesus continues to teach and to interact with the religious leaders who try to trap Him. The Pharisees ask if the Jews should pay Roman taxes. Either a yes or a no would cause problems for Jesus. Jesus explains that the people should render to God what is God's and to Caesar what is Caesar's.

The Sadducees, who do not believe in the resurrection, pose a ridiculous question about marriage in this world and the next. Jesus explains to them that Eternal Life is not just a continuation of earthly life. Exactly what the life to come will be like is not clear but no one will be disappointed.

Jesus then asks the leaders a question about King David. David calls the Messiah His Lord, but elsewhere, the Messiah is referred to as a Son of David. Jesus is simply trying to get these men to consider that they might not know as much as they think.

Jesus concludes these interactions by exposing the scribes' false piety. These are men who appear to be godly on the outside but whose hearts are disobedient and selfish. Jesus warns them, and those gathered, that people like this will receive a condemnation rather than rewards.

This week:
After exposing the Jewish leaders as leaders who lead others astray, Jesus goes to sit by the Temple gates. He notices many rich men pouring their offerings into the Temple coffers. He also sees a widow contribute two mites, which represents all the money that she had. Jesus remarks that she has given more than all the others. Jesus sees our hearts and knows why we give our money.

People pass by and remark at the beauty of the Temple.

Jesus then begins to speak about His return, and we see parallels between the destruction of Jerusalem and the devastation that will precede His final return. Jesus makes it clear that there will be certain signs, such as wars between nations and natural disasters. He makes it clear that these are only precursors and not the final indicators of His return.

Review:
On Palm Sunday, after His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Jesus went to the Temple and found the Temple courts filled with money changers and merchants. They were cheating the worshipers who needed to buy sacrificial animals. Jesus began to drive out these people to return the Temple to its true purpose, the worship of God. Jesus taught by example.
On another day, the Pharisees asked Him by what authority he did these things. Jesus asked them a question in return. His Cousin John had baptized people with water. Jesus asks the Pharisees whether this baptism was of God or of man. Either answer would cause trouble for the Pharisees, so they refused to answer. Likewise, Jesus refuses to answer their question.
In response, Jesus tells a parable about a man who planted a vineyard, leased it to tenants, and went away to conduct business far from home. When the harvest comes, he sends servants to collect what he is owed. The tenants beat the servants and sent them away with nothing. The sends his son, thinking the tenants will respect him and pay what is owed. The tenants kill the son, hoping they will inherit the vineyard. Jesus tells the Pharisees that the owner will come and destroy the unruly tenants. The Pharisees immediately object because they know where they fit in the parable! To understand the meaning and the role of each actor watch last week's service.

This week:
