Community Church Ministry

Community Church Ministry Neighborhood ministry. Going to where people live to share the love of God. Trailer Park Ministry? Apartment Ministry? What's the point? There's too many churches!

I get it... There's a church on every corner. Why do church in a trailer park or apartment? I agree, to a point...

But, even though there are so many churches, people are staying away in record numbers... There are too many "reasons" to list. Since they are staying away, they are not hearing the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ...

It affects this generation, and the next... There ar

e children who have never heard the Word...

Broken lives are everywhere. Drug abuse and alcoholism is rampant...

If people aren't coming... Why not go to them? But, it takes thinking outside the box, doing things differently...

It means being willing to go in there and meet some physical needs too...

I won't go into too much detail here, but let me finish this with a true story...

A few years ago, we did a Thursday night dinner/ small group in a small trailer park in Rome. We met in a small room next to the laundromat. I walked through the neighborhood to look for people to invite to dinner. I met Jason who was walking near his house. I invited him, and he said he needed to ask his dad. After getting permission, we walked together to the meeting place. Jason told me he had never been to church before...

That night, Jason raised his hand, and accepted Christ as his Savior. That's why we go...

"... Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house may be full." Luke 14:23

He Was a Good Man

“For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭11:24‬ ‭

We are first introduced to Barnabas in Acts 4:36-37.
“And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.”
The first thing you notice about Barnabas is that he is an encourager. (That's probably why the apostles gave him that nickname.)
Later it's said of him:
“Then when he arrived and witnessed the grace of God, he rejoiced and began to ENCOURAGE them all with resolute heart to remain true to the Lord;”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭11:23‬ ‭
Second, he was a Levite.
Oxford Languages says a Levite was: "a member of the Hebrew tribe of Levi, especially of that part of it which provided assistants to the priests in the worship in the Jewish temple." Barnabas was born into a "helper" clan.
Third, we note his generosity. He sold his land and gave it to the apostles. This money would be used for those in need.
Fourth, Barnabas could see the potential in a new convert named Saul, the one who had previously persecuted the church.
“But Barnabas took hold of him and brought him to the apostles and described to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had talked to him, and how at Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭9:27‬ ‭
Later on, he went to bat for John Mark, who had deserted them previously but came back.
Barnabas could see his potential in spite of his past.
Unfortunately, Paul (who used to be Saul) disagreed, and this led to them splitting up.
“And there occurred such a sharp disagreement that they separated from one another, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭15:39‬ ‭
That's the last we hear of Barnabas, but Luke remembers him fondly:
“For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭11:24‬ ‭
What kind of legacy are we leaving?
Let's strive to be like Barnabas: an encourager, a helper, generous, and one who could see the potential in someone!

Strategy For Neighborhood Ministry
(Part 2)

Consult: Do you know people who live there? It would be great if they are part of your team. At the very least, they can be a consultant. Do you know the manager or property owner? Ideally, your contacts can introduce you to the manager, and will help invite other residents to events. If someone you know is already present, he or she can make meeting you and taking part in your ministry events more likely as that person can be a bridge to others in the neighborhood. Pray for those people who can help you.

A Setback Or A Setup?

“But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭16:25‬ ‭

Paul had prayed for guidance as to where to minister next. "What about Asia?" The Spirit said no. "Mysia?" No. "Bithynia?" No.
Finally, through a dream, the Lord showed Paul that he was to go to Macedonia.
So, he and Silas arrived in Phillipi, "which was the foremost part of Macedonia..." Acts 16:12
On the Sabbath, instead of going to a synagogue, they are led to the riverside, where a group of women are praying. Paul and Silas preach, and a lady named Lydia believes, and is baptized, along with her household.
I'm sure Paul and Silas rejoiced that souls were being saved, and felt peace about being there.
Well, opposition comes a little later, and Paul and Silas are beaten and thrown into jail.
It would have been easy for them to question God.
"Why did you let this happen?" "Were we really supposed to come to Macedonia?"
This appeared to be a setback...
Dr. John Koessler writes:
"The gospel’s power does not depend on you! What you experience as a setback in your life could be God’s open door for the gospel to move forward."
Instead of complaining, Paul and Silas chose to praise God in the midst of their suffering.
It says the prisoners were listening. I'm sure the jailer was too!
Next is an earthquake that frees the prisoners from their bonds. But no one runs!
The jailer falls down and asked how he can be saved.
Paul instructs him to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. He and his household are baptized.
Things in our lives can appear to be setbacks, but if we choose to praise God in the midst of them, we might just see this setback turn into a setup for something that glorifies God.
"When we encounter difficulties and opposition, is it a setback or an open door from God? Father, help us see and understand the difference and act according to the guidance of your Spirit."
Dr. John Koessler

Strategy for Neighborhood Ministry
(Part 1)

(Note: The steps outlined here are suggestions. Some are things I learned from experience. Prayerfully read them and modify them to fit the situation. Ask God for wisdom. See James 1:5)
Pray: As you pick a focus area, pray. Walk or drive through the area yourself, much like Nehemiah, who rode on a donkey at night to survey the damage to the wall. … If your church or group is on board with the mission, invite them to a prayer walk/ drive with you. You are inviting the Lord to go before you to start preparing the hearts and minds of the people who will be reached by your ministry.

Set Apart

“As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭13:2‬ ‭

Set apart... If you've ever been to or participated in an ordination at church, you may have heard those words. "Brother Johnson has been set apart for the Gospel ministry."
The Holy Spirit made it clear that Paul and Barnabas were called to do something for God. They were called to preach the Gospel but, they would have to do some traveling.
Paul and Barnabas didn't get to stay in Jerusalem with the apostles.
The Bible seems to indicate that they didn't waste any time.
“Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭13:3-4‬ ‭
Notice that they prayed before and after the Holy Spirit's calling. This reminds us of the importance of seeking God's direction and power.
Paul and Barnabas could have said, "No fair! How come we don't get to stay home like the other apostles? I wish I had their calling!"
Nope. They went. It was a hard journey, but they gave it their all, and God blessed their efforts.
Being set apart is not only for ordinations, but I think it can be applied to everyday life.
What is your "calling?"
God has something unique for you to do. You may already be doing it. You can thrive wherever He has planted you.
Don't compare yourself to others. Walk in the path God has placed you in.
Don't forget to seek His direction.
You have been "Set apart!"
