Community Church Ministry

Community Church Ministry Neighborhood ministry. Going to where people live to share the love of God. Trailer Park Ministry? Apartment Ministry? What's the point? There's too many churches!

I get it... There's a church on every corner. Why do church in a trailer park or apartment? I agree, to a point...

But, even though there are so many churches, people are staying away in record numbers... There are too many "reasons" to list. Since they are staying away, they are not hearing the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ...

It affects this generation, and the next... There ar

e children who have never heard the Word...

Broken lives are everywhere. Drug abuse and alcoholism is rampant...

If people aren't coming... Why not go to them? But, it takes thinking outside the box, doing things differently...

It means being willing to go in there and meet some physical needs too...

I won't go into too much detail here, but let me finish this with a true story...

A few years ago, we did a Thursday night dinner/ small group in a small trailer park in Rome. We met in a small room next to the laundromat. I walked through the neighborhood to look for people to invite to dinner. I met Jason who was walking near his house. I invited him, and he said he needed to ask his dad. After getting permission, we walked together to the meeting place. Jason told me he had never been to church before...

That night, Jason raised his hand, and accepted Christ as his Savior. That's why we go...

"... Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house may be full." Luke 14:23

Peace Be Still

“Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭4:39‬ ‭

Imagine you are watching the ocean waves crashing into the shore. The waves suddenly get larger, and you can hear the wind howling.
Then, the waves become smaller and smaller. The wind becomes silent and starts to blow gently...
One day, many years ago, I was really angry about something... My voice became louder as I complained to my co workers standing nearby. One of them said calmly, "Peace, be still."
I knew exactly why he said that. There was a storm brewing in my life, based on something so important.... that I can't remember it now...
"Peace be still." He uttered these words as a prayer that Jesus would calm the storm in my life, just as He calmed the storm long ago.
Jesus had said to His disciples, "Let us cross to the other side." Mark 4:35
So, their destination was never in doubt, or it shouldn't have been.
The disciples became frightened in the midst of the storm. They awoke a sleeping Jesus and said "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" Mark 4:38
Sometimes we forget that God is leading us to the other shore. We forget that He will never leave us or forsake us. (Deuteronomy 31:6)
We tend to put our minds on the storms brewing, and before long we feel a storm brewing inside of us, and our soul becomes like the turbulent waves of the ocean. Waves of fear, anxiety and anger...
But the Master says "Peace be still."
May the peace of God which passes all understanding fill your soul today. You WILL get to the other shore...

Be Kind, Rewind

“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:32‬ ‭
Have you seen the yard signs that say "Be Kind"?
When I first saw one, it reminded me of where I first saw the phrase. It was years ago on a VHS tape case. (Long before the DVD and all the digital stuff, this was how we watched movies!)
Rewinding the tape before you returned it was a way to be kind to the clerk at the video store or the next person who rented/ borrowed the tape.
Paul reminds us to be kind to one another. OK, we can do that.
Then he says to be tenderhearted. Let's show compassion and empathy for folks we come in contact with.
The third part might be the hardest part. "...forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”
We shouldn't hold a grudge. If I'm tempted to, I look in the mirror and remind myself that Christ has forgiven me for a TON of sins. Then, I forgive, and release it to God, and leave the person in God's hands.
So, maybe the archaic tape label has a new meaning for us today.
When you rewind a tape, you can play it again.
Once you shower someone with an act of kindness, keep doing it. Then, be kind to the next one, even if they don't deserve it.
Maybe your acts of kindness will inspire others to do the same.
"Be Kind.Rewind."

Strategy For Neighborhood Ministry
(Part 9)

Communicate the team’s idea with the property manager:
Do they have a community room or spare unit for your team to use? In some cases, you may have to meet outside for a while. A tent or mobile worship center would work.
If you decide to do weekly events, appoint a “Pastor” and “Co-Pastor” (Use different titles if you wish, or no titles at all!) These will be the shepherds for the community. Their responsibilities will be a lot more than preaching. The community pastors need to be leaders who are not afraid to work, get their hands dirty, visit people, mingle, teach, disciple, and get to know the community.

Thankful For Failures

"The righteous may fall seven times but still get up, but the wicked will stumble into trouble."
Proverbs 24:16

Right before the baseball season, several players decide to retire. Last year, pitcher AJ Ramos was one of them.
“Everyday you get to play/live truly is a blessing,” Ramos wrote as part of his statement. “The ability to enjoy the process is a big part of being successful because you soon realize that every setback or failure is just an opportunity to learn and get better. So I am thankful for my failures just as much as my success, beyond grateful for my time playing baseball.” (MLB.com)
What caught my eye is his statement that he is "thankful for his failures."
Weird. I tend to be very thankful for success, small and large. Failures? Not so much.
But, if we change our attitude, and look at our failures as an opportunity to learn, and not make the same mistakes, it becomes a positive thing.
Dale Carnegie said:
"Learn from your mistakes. Develop success from failures.."
So, if we are thankful, as Paul said "In all things." (1 Thessalonians 5:18) then we can analyze our mistakes, and develop a plan for success.
Winston Churchill said:
"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts,” and, “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”
Like most people, I tend to stew over my failures and get depressed. But, if I could look at them through the lense of thankfulness, learning from them, I can move towards a brighter day. I can get back up again when I fall.
I found this prayer on a blog called "A Small Work" attributed to an author named Ryan:
"Thank you, God, for my failures. I do not like to fail, but I trust you use my failures for good in me.
In my failure, I realize how much I need help. So often I fail because I barrel into a task or project on my own. Thank you for reminding me of my limitations and for providing every droplet of assistance I need.
In my failure, I see my vulnerability and sin. I
recognize my selfish choices, my blind spots, and the categories I didn’t even know existed. Thank you for pointing out my mistakes and for forgiving me as your child."
