Community Church Ministry Neighborhood ministry. Going to where people live to share the love of God. Trailer Park Ministry? Apartment Ministry? What's the point? There's too many churches!

I get it... There's a church on every corner. Why do church in a trailer park or apartment? I agree, to a point...

But, even though there are so many churches, people are staying away in record numbers... There are too many "reasons" to list. Since they are staying away, they are not hearing the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ...

It affects this generation, and the next... There are children who have never heard the Word...

Broken lives are everywhere. Drug abuse and alcoholism is rampant...

If people aren't coming... Why not go to them? But, it takes thinking outside the box, doing things differently...

It means being willing to go in there and meet some physical needs too...

I won't go into too much detail here, but let me finish this with a true story...

A few years ago, we did a Thursday night dinner/ small group in a small trailer park in Rome. We met in a small room next to the laundromat. I walked through the neighborhood to look for people to invite to dinner. I met Jason who was walking near his house. I invited him, and he said he needed to ask his dad. After getting permission, we walked together to the meeting place. Jason told me he had never been to church before...

That night, Jason raised his hand, and accepted Christ as his Savior. That's why we go...

"... Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house may be full." Luke 14:23

Pray, Don't Panic

“The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭14:15-16‬

Moses was in trouble. Pharaoh and his army was coming closer, intending to kill anyone who would resist them.
Not only that, an angry mob of his own people was yelling at him.
“Then they said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt? Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭14:11-12‬ ‭
Things looked really bleak. The children of Israel had no weapons and no artillery. How were they going to stand before Pharaoh's army?
Moses didn't give in. As far as we know, he didn't panic. He tried to reassure the people.
“And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭14:13-14‬ ‭
Then, Moses prayed. His words are not recorded, but I imagine it was pretty intense, because God said:
“And the Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward."
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭14:15
God said: "Why do you cry to Me?" It wasn't that God didn't want to hear Moses'
prayer, because He definitely heard his plea, his cry for help.
The time had come to move forward.
"Tell the children of Israel to go forward. But lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. "
Exodus 14:15-16
God was going to do His part. Moses and the children of Israel had to do their part. Move forward by faith.
They did this, and God responded. Boy, did He ever! To summarize:
“So the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭14:30‬ ‭
Sometimes we find ourselves in seemingly impossible situations. Look to the left... Enemies charging toward you. Look to the right... Folks reminding you that the situation is hopeless.
So, what do you do?
Look up, and pray. The psalmist said:
“I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭121:1-2‬ ‭
God is going to answer, at just the right time.
Pray, and don't panic.

Strategy for Neighborhood Ministry
(Parts 1 and 2)

Pray: As you pick a focus area, pray. Walk or drive through the area yourself, much like Nehemiah, who rode on a donkey at night to survey the damage to the wall. … If your church or group is on board with the mission, invite them to a prayer walk/ drive with you. You are inviting the Lord to go before you to start preparing the hearts and minds of the people who will be reached by your ministry.
Consult: Do you know people who live there? It would be great if they are part of your team. At the very least, they can be a consultant. Do you know the manager or property owner? Ideally, your contacts can introduce you to the manager, and will help invite other residents to events. If someone you know is already present, he or she can make meeting you and taking part in your ministry events more likely as that person can be a bridge to others in the neighborhood. Pray for those people who can help you.

After These Acts of Faithfulness...

“After these acts of faithfulness Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and besieged the fortified cities, and thought to break into them for himself.”
‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭32:1‬ ‭

You did your best, but it didn’t seem to matter. In spite of your efforts, your forward progress, opposition and difficulties came. Disappointment sets in.
Hezekiah followed God. He led a "revival" in the land, helping to turn the hearts of many to the LORD. Hezekiah got rid of the foreign gods, organizing temple priests, singers and helpers, leading people to worship the one true God.
‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭31:20-21‬ offers a summary:
“Thus Hezekiah did throughout all Judah, and he did what was good and right and faithful before the Lord his God. And every work that he undertook in the service of the house of God and in accordance with the law and the commandments, seeking his God, he did with all his heart, and prospered.”
Everything looked pretty bright and positive, right?
Yes…. Then the opposition came.
“After these acts of faithfulness Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and besieged the fortified cities, and thought to break into them for himself.”
‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭32:1‬
What did Hezekiah do?
He didn't give up. Instead, he, along with the prophet Isaiah, went to God in prayer.
“But King Hezekiah and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed about this and cried out to heaven.”
‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭32:20‬ ‭
God answered in a miraculous way!
“And the Lord sent an angel who destroyed every mighty warrior, commander and officer in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned in shame to his own land. And when he had entered the temple of his god, some of his own children killed him there with the sword.”
‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭32:21‬ ‭
So, keep on serving the Lord! When setbacks occur, talk to the Lord about it, and don't give up.
Don't ever give up!

What A Difference A Year Makes

“So an officer on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God and said, “Look, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, could this thing be?” And he said, “In fact, you shall see it with your eyes, but you shall not eat of it.”
‭‭II Kings‬ ‭7:2‬ ‭

Sometime in 2021, a year after the Covid outbreak, my wife told me that she found cans of disinfectant marked down to $2. In 2020, it was hard to find ANY disinfectant spray. If you did, it was probably at least $5! I don't think any of us would've believed that one year later, the price would be so low.
The famine was really severe in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet.
Prices were inflated on what little was left.
“There was a great famine in Samaria; and behold, they besieged it, until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a fourth of a kab of dove’s dung for five shekels of silver.”
‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭6:25‬ ‭
The meaning of "dove's dung" is unclear, but you get the picture. There was very little food available. People were also resorting to cannibalism.
The outlook was bleak.
Yet, God inspired Elisha to prophesy:
“Then Elisha said, “Listen to the word of the LORD; thus says the LORD, ‘Tomorrow about this time a measure of fine flour will be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.’ ”
‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭7:1‬ ‭
Hearing this, an officer of the king, his "right hand man" sneered and said it was impossible. No way this could happen.
Elisha answered him and said that the officer would see it, but wouldn't get to eat any of it.
Read the rest of the chapter. It's a really cool story about how God ended the famine, in a very unconventional way.
Remember what Jesus said: “And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭19:26‬ ‭
Keep praying in faith, believing that God will answer, even when man says it's impossible.
Oh, and don't forget to go buy some disinfectant while it's cheap!
