FROM OUR PASTOR...

This time of year, when I look out the window from my study at home, all I see is green. Our house sits on a wooded lot with plenty of oak and hickory trees, along with a few dogwoods and pine saplings mixed in. In the dead of winter, the view from my window is stark and bare. But with summer almost here, all I see is green—and that makes me smile.

Green has always been my favorite color. As a child, the green crayon was the one I wore down the quickest. No picture was complete without some green in it. And today, I’m still biased. I love a green traffic light, a green pen, green grass in my yard, green beans, and green M&M’s. Green soothes my soul and warms my heart.
Green also reminds me of my need to grow—in faith, in love, in patience, and in understanding. No matter our age, we are invited by God to keep growing and maturing, becoming more like Jesus. As Paul wrote, “Speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ” (Ephesians 4:15).

This summer, I encourage you to be intentional in your growth as a Christian. It doesn’t have to be complicated or burdensome. Instead, take some simple steps to deepen your discipleship and faith in God. Those steps might include reading from the Gospels each day, coming to Bible study and worship on Sundays, volunteering in a local ministry, praying more often, or simply sitting in silence with God.

However you choose to grow, ask God to help you. Set simple and achievable goals. Give yourself plenty of grace along the way. And give thanks whenever you begin to see the fruit of the Spirit emerging in your life.

May this summer be a green and growing season for us all.

Your pastor and friend,
David
