Happy feast day of St. Hellen! Tradition holds that St. Hellen, discovered the True Cross in the Holy Land by stumbling upon a closet near the Holy Sepulcher. Three crosses were there and they didn't know which one Jesus had died on. So, they found a man who was maimed and sick and had him touch each cross. After he touched the True Cross, he was healed. Today's Gospel warns the materially rich -- it is easier for a camel to go through a needle than for a rich person to enter into Heaven. But Saint Hellen was rich. So what gives? She used her wealth to help the sick and point to Jesus. May the cross be our key to Heaven.

Today is a very special day, it is our Patronal Feast Day -- Happy St. Clare Day to all our wonderful parishioners and to everyone who has a devotion to this powerful saint of the Church! Clare admired the great Francis of Assisi and in March 17, 1212 she escaped her noble home and the comforts that this would provide her to join in the mission of penance and prayer for the salvation of the world. One time, Clare also saved the town of Assisi and the convent she founded by praying before the Blessed Sacrament as vandals approached to destroy everything. She begged before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and questioned him, "Behold, my Lord, is it possible You want to deliver into the hands of pagans Your defenseless handmaids, whom I have taught out of love for You? I pray You, Lord, protect these Your handmaids whom I cannot now save by myself." Jesus responded "I will always protect you!" And so she boldly added that if it be His wish, please save Assisi also. The rest is history. St. Clare of Assisi, our patron, pray for us!

Today we celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord! In St. Paul's second letter to the Corinthians (3:7-4:6), the apostle speaks about the veil Moses used to see God on Mt Sinai. While it was blinding for all the apostles, especially Jesus' inner circle (Peter, James, and John) the Lord permitted them to see Him, his glory, on Mt Tabor and we join the ecstatic Peter and say "it is good that we are here." Do you let God give you awe and wonder or must life remain plain, deprived of deeper insight and meaning? Permit him to give you awe and wonder. Notice Him for in Him there is no veil.

Happy feast day of St. John Marie Vianney! A humble parish priest born in Lyon, France who struggled greatly to arrive at his vocation. On his way to his assignment to a remote corner of his diocese at Ars, he got lost. He stumbled upon a boy and asked for directions saying "show me the way to Ars and I will show you the way to Heaven!" He spent himself there hearing confessions, he survived and lived through the brutal French Revolution, and he fought against the devil at night. He died on August 4, 1859. St. John Vianney, patron saint of priests, pray for us!
