1st United Methodist Church of Rolla, Missouri We are 1st United Methodist Church of Rolla, Missouri - a faith home for anyone looking for peace, purpose and direction in life.
(1)

We find that by following Jesus Christ in the Wesleyan-Methodist tradition. All are welcome to join us on this journey. Welcome to 1st United Methodist Church of Rolla, Missouri. We’re part of the Methodist Movement that started in England in the 1730s and now spans the globe, enacting the words of our Founder, John Wesley, “The world is my parish.”
The Methodist way of following Jesus came to Rol

la in 1861 when the pastor and congregation from Maramec Spring began their missional and congregation-establishing work here toward what became Rolla’s first Christian church. Our original building at the corner of Main and 9th Streets was built shortly thereafter and served the congregation and community well during that tumultuous time in American history, providing shelter and work for Union Soldiers, and help for recently emancipated African Americans. Since then, generations of people dedicated to cultivating holiness of heart and life in their apprenticeship to the Lord Jesus Christ have called this congregation their faith home. We believe that loving God and loving Neighbor, what Jesus declares to be the two greatest Commandments, must be enacted in very practical ways. We show our love of God by providing Spirit-led, Christ-centered, and heartfelt worship that glorifies God and helps people recognize God’s activity in their lives and in the world God loves. We show our love of Neighbor through concrete and ongoing actions that help them flourish, such as our work through the Greater Rolla Area Charitable Enterprise, our Sewing Endeavors group, our Prayer Shawl Ministry, our small groups, our youth group, our Preschool Ministry – and much more. In short, we believe that when we pray the part of the Lord’s Prayer where Jesus teaches us to pray, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven…” – those aren’t mere words or nice thoughts. They’re a God-ordained mission to live out: We prayerfully hope that God’s love will be refracted through us, and that God’s will might be done through us, as we bear witness now to God’s emerging – and ultimate – New Creation. Absolutely everyone is welcome to join us in this Christ-centered, soul-saving, life-changing, God-glorifying, Neighbor-serving work. One of the stained-glass windows in our original 1864 building captures all of this quite well: “We Work Because We Believe.” God, Who is Love, loves you. And we’d love to have you join us in whatever ways you are led and comfortable in this holy, dare we say “Methodical,” way of being God’s people serving a dissipated and hurting world that God loves.

O God, all that you have given us is yours. As first you gave Sue to us, now we give her back to you. Receive Sue into the arms of your mercy. Raise her up with all your people. Receive us also and raise us into a new life. Help us so to love and serve you in this world that we may enter into your joy in the world to come. Amen.

John Wesley's Journal Entry for May 24, 1738

In the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street, where one was reading Luther’s preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death. ~ John Wesley, May 24, 1738

Good Morning!
Today is the Festival of the Ascension of the Lord, and here are the Scriptures for that:
Acts 1:1-11,
Psalm 47,
Ephesians 1:15-23,
and Luke 24:44-53
Please pause to read and to meditate upon them, considering what it means that Christ fills all things - and then please also ruminate upon Charles Wesley's hymn for the Ascension in the accompanying photo. Thank you.

Good Morning, Church Family & Friends – it’s Tuesday, May 5, 2026 – Taco Tuesday on Cinco de Mayo! What a convergence! Is that Los Arcos I hear calling?

In my “Update from PastorLand” before Sunday’s message I mentioned how I am being blessed to be meeting other pastors in town who’s work I appreciate, and in some cases, how I like being connected to pastors who (sad but true) would otherwise not talk to each other. I see that as one of my vital roles wherever I’ve served and it’s nice to see it coming to life here.

In talking about that, I mentioned John Wesley’s sermon, “A Catholic Spirit” and how I would send out a link to it – so here it is: https://www.crivoice.org/cathspirit.html
I commend that to your reading and ruminations. It’s an excellent work describing our loving posture in society as Wesleyan Methodists – especially in our dealings with other followers of Christ.

Then, during Sunday’s message, I was making the point that for service to be joyful, alignment with how God designs us and gifts us is crucial. So, I suggest engagement with the materials about Spiritual Gifts found here:
https://www.umcdiscipleship.org/articles/an-introduction-to-spiritual-gifts
The information in that main article and the links therein are helpful and are a very good place to start prayerfully exploring how God is equipping you for Joyful Service.

Finally, this Thursday, May 7, 2026 will be the National Day of Prayer. Here’s how that’s being observed in our Community:
• The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast will be at the Havener Center on the Missouri S & T Campus at 6:30 a.m. There’s no charge for that event.
• Then there will be an informal prayer gathering at Noon in front of the Phelps County Courthouse.
• Then, to wrap things up in a very nice way, there will be a community worship event at 1st Presbyterian Church at 7:00 p.m. Sue Jackson, Sue Reno, and I are part of a choir sourced from many churches that will be performing some dynamic and moving pieces – and Rolla’s former City Manager, John Butz, will be the keynote speaker.
I hope that many of us will attend any or all these events.

Sunday will be our Red Bucket Sunday for Hope of the Ozarks. Thank you all for your extra-mile offerings support of their vital work!

“Keep alert;
stand firm in the faith;
be courageous;
be strong.
Let all that you do be done in love.” (1st Corinthians 16:13-14)

In Christ,
-- Pastor Joel

Spiritual gifts are just that – gifts, given to Christian believers for the building up of the whole body of Christ.
