This past week we have been reminded in both Jonah and in Matthew that the expectation from our Heavenly Father is for those of us who have received God’s mercy is that we extend that mercy to one another. He gives us mercy in abundance, let us show that to others!

What do we do when someone sins against us?

Jesus doesn't tell us to sit in anger, judgment, and bitterness while we wait for them to come apologize. He tells us to go to them.

That's hard. In fact, it's part of the high cost of discipleship.

Sometimes people don't even realize they've hurt us. But if we refuse to address it, bitterness can take root and damage a relationship for years.

Following Jesus means being willing to do the hard thing, even when we'd rather wait for someone else to make the first move. Don't let bitterness take root.

Jonah's disobedience didn't just affect Jonah. His refusal to obey God delayed the message God had given him for an entire city.

And it forces us to ask ourselves a difficult question... Who might be missing out because we're refusing to obey God's direction for our own lives?

We don't know what God wants to do through our obedience. But we do know that He has called us to go, to love people, and to share the good news.

Don't let pride, stubbornness, or fear keep you from doing what God has called you to do.

Jesus didn't keep sinners at arm's length. He sat with them, loved them, and brought the hope of the Gospel to people the religious elite had rejected.

The question for us is uncomfortable: who are the people we would rather avoid?

Being salt and light means going to the people who need Jesus, not simply staying where we're comfortable. Jesus wasn't afraid that being around sinners would change Him. He knew that being around Him could change them.

Do we have that same confidence?

Have you ever felt like you've blown it so badly that God couldn't possibly use you again?

Jonah ran from God, failed, and lived with the consequences of his choices. But God came back to him with another opportunity to obey.

Your failure isn't the end of your story. Our God is a God of second chances, third chances, fourth chances, and beyond.

Don't let shame convince you that God is finished with you.
