Ps 103:6-14
The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel. The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. (ESV)
1 John 5:11-13
And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life. (ESV)
There are two kinds of people in the world (past, present and future). There are those who are forgiven of their sins by God and there are those who are not forgiven. To be forgiven is to be saved. To be saved is to belong to the church of God, the body of Christ, the family of God, and the kingdom of his beloved Son. God adds the saved to his people and he knows for sure those who are his.
Since our forgiveness is secured by the blood of Jesus, it is for sure. Not maybe. Not “I hope so”. Not “I feel like it”. The saved are given the Holy Spirit as a deposit or guarantee of their salvation. We are assured that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus our Lord. As we continue to walk in his light (Jesus is the light of the world), he continues to forgive us of our sins by the blood of Jesus.
I love the imagery used by the Psalmist when he says that our sins are removed from us as far as the east is from the west. In another passage we are told that God puts our sins behind his back. Through the death of Jesus on our behalf, our sins are taken away as though they never existed. This takes away the fear of death because we stand before God with a sinless record. In Jesus we are saved!
O Lord God, creator and giver of life, it is with joy that I come to you and thank you for all you have done for me and all you do for me every day. Thank you for sending Jesus to this earth to live and die for me so that I can live with you in eternity. Lord, I ask you to be with our nation. Guide our leaders so that we can live quiet and peaceful lives in all godliness. Protect those who are homeless and especially those who are mentally incapable of properly caring for themselves. Give peace of mind to the troubled. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
