The Wisdom of Having Wise Friends
Gwen Smith

Today’s Truth
Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed (Proverbs 15:22, ESV).

Friend to Friend
My husband is a wise man, and God has placed him as the head of our home, so I like to talk through difficult things with him. He gives me a perspective that’s often quite different from mine.

When I need to hash out confusion, I sometimes go to the small group of women I call my besties. They're godly. They love me. They like me. They laugh at and with me. They pray for me. They mentor me and provide counsel.

Now, it's true: God always needs to be our go-to guy when it comes to counsel. Our first call. But the Bible also gives us the directive to connect with other Christ followers for guidance: seek godly counsel.

“The LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless” (Proverbs 2:6–7).

When I make an effort to seek godly counsel, I benefit from the power of the Lord that is at work in the lives of those around me. I benefit from their mistakes and from their successes.

It frees me from the pressure of having to figure everything out on my own.

It frees me to move forward beyond my own limited experiences, faith, and knowledge.

Struggling with a tough work situation? Tangled up in a messy marriage knot? Are you being held captive by fear, doubt, and insecurity? Get some godly counsel. The writer of Proverbs tells us, “Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22 ESV).

We’re all in different seasons of life and have different needs for godly wisdom. I'm a poppy, you're a rose, she's a daisy—we're a wildflower bouquet! If you’re single, divorced, or widowed, you might be the head of your home. If so, you could connect with a pastor for godly counsel, or a trusted friend who follows hard after Jesus, or a godly family member or coworker.

Another person I encourage you to reach out to is the women’s ministry director of your church. Grab coffee or lunch with her. She'll love you!

There are many ways you can gain godly wisdom and add greater power to your life. Add to this list as you discover what works for you.

Are you a journal girl? Write about the areas in which you need God’s wisdom. Write a prayer in your journal that spells them out in black and white. Pursue the treasure!

And here’s a wonky twist: sometimes God answers our prayers for wisdom by sending us to talk with someone who doesn’t even follow Him but has the knowledge we need.

Case in point, when our son Preston broke his jaw and needed reconstructive surgery, Brad and I got counsel from a highly trained oral and maxillofacial surgeon. We prayed for the Lord to lead each decision we made and to guide the hands and choices of the surgical team, but our medical counsel came straight from the medical expert. His faith had nothing to do with it. Though that medical advice may or may not have come from a follower of Christ, Brad and I prayed for the Lord to lead with His wisdom in, on, and through it all.

God’s Word promises that He will walk you to the understanding you need.

Just ask.

I know you want His leading as much as I do. So, when life gets crazy confusing, remember that you can gain clarity and direction when you surround yourself with godly people.

Let’s Pray
Dear Lord, You are the source of all the wisdom I ever need. Thank you for using others in my life to influence my success. Please help me grow in and welcome godly counsel.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn
Name three people you know who give godly advice. Thank them today.

Are you that person to anyone else? If this topic is a wake-up call because you find yourself with very few godly friends, spend some time in prayer about this. Then search some out.

Working Out the Kinks
Gwen Smith

Today’s Truth
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9, ESV).

Friend to Friend
I became a watering girl that summer.

Not because my black thumb suddenly turned green, but because my husband had ordered a heap of mulch and I was determined to not have a lame bare patch in the landscaped section of the house. No sir-eee! Mulch should be the accessory, not the main feature. My opinion.

So, in response to the mulch mountain, I drove my spontaneous little self to the gardening store and bought us some new bushes, a few flowers, and a tree. And I quickly learned that once all of said planty-purchases were in the ground, they required… gasp… maintaining so they could take root.

Totally cool, I thought as I strapped on my big girl panties. I can do this!

So now I’m a watering girl. My sunny days often begin with the garden hose in hand. And I love it. The birds sing melodies in all their chirpy cuteness and the plants respond with claps of gratitude. (I seriously think they clap… in their own way. Moving on…)

Early one morning I unwound the hose and watered our small cucumber garden. Then I headed toward a few thirsty plant-friends in the back of the lawn along the fence. As I began to water, the flow trickled to a stop.

I looked up and spied the water-stopping nemesis. A kink in the hose.

So frustrating.

There was plenty of water. It just couldn’t flow because the hose had flipped and kinked. I tried to flap it out from where I was across the yard, but this kink was a good bit down the line. It required that I drop everything and address it. Once the kink was fixed, the water flowed smoothly, and the rest of my plants got their drinks.

What a picture of faith.

Just like a hose is connected to a water source, our souls are connected to the Living Water – Jesus. And though as believers we are always connected to Him and always have access to the refreshment and nourishment our souls need, there are times when kinks happen, and the flow stops.

I can think of a few times when, just like the hose, I flipped and kinked up the flow. Can you relate?

Our kinks come in all shapes and sizes. You and I get flipped over by disappointments, unmet expectations, other people, or simply by our own attitudes, unbelief, fears, behaviors, rebellion, or unhealthy emotions.

How can you work out the kinks of your circumstances and relationships? Depend on the strength of God instead of your own. Go to Him in prayer. Ask for grace. Align your life to the teachings of the Bible. Yielding to His Spirit.

The biggest of all kinks, however, is our own sin.

Pastor Timothy Keller said it this way; “The sin that is most destructive in your life right now is the one you are most defensive about.”

Ouch. Big kink. Right?

How can we work out the kinks of our sin? By confession. “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” (1 John 1:8-10, ESV)

“Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.” (James 4:17)
Got a few sin kinks? Sure you do. We all do. Some might stem from blatant rebellion to God’s will, while others might be simply NOT doing something you know you ought to do. Regardless, if you and I want to have a right relationship with God, we must deal with sin honestly. Nothing can separate us from God’s love, but sin sure can stop the flow of us experiencing the power of His peace, grace, strength, and joy.

The Anglican theologian Richard Sibbes summed up the good news of Jesus beautifully when he said, “There is more mercy in Christ than sin in us.”

I. Am. So. Thankful.

What would it look like to let the grace of God work out your kinks today?

Let’s Pray
Dear Lord, I'm so thankful that Your mercy is greater than my sin. Please forgive me for ____________ . You know my heart and You know my ways. Cover me fresh with grace today so I can experience Your joy, strength, and peace.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn
Time to be a woman of courage! Grab your journal and list a few of your known kinks.

Pray that the Lord would reveal some of your unknown kinks to you and ask that He would contend with you in those areas.

Where Broken Began
Sharon Jaynes

Today’s Truth
The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work (1 John 3:8 NIV).

Friend to Friend
I watched the news and mourned the hatred of mankind. I read the paper and questioned the senseless headlines. I listened to the radio and cried about the wildfires out west. Silently I prayed, God, why is the world so messed up? And then the Holy Spirit reminded me of where broken began.

When God fashioned, fitted, and filled the earth, there was nothing but goodness. The lion and the lamb lay side-by-side. Adam and Eve lived a harmonious existence without a hint of discord. God and human beings communed with no barrier between them. All creation ebbed and flowed with the rhythm of the tides and the breath of God. There was no lack, only abundance; no fear, only calm assurance; no violence, only peace; no hatred, only love; no sickness, only health. “ God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31).

God gave Adam and Eve just one restriction within a bounty of freedom—a restriction that was for their protection and provision. But he also gave them free will: the choice to obey or disobey—to stay within the protective boundaries of his perfect plan or step beyond them.

Adam and Eve had unveiled communion with God, unadulterated community with each other, and unlimited access to all that God had made . . . except for one little thing.

The Tree.

But we know what happened next. Genesis 3 begins with the daunting words, “Now the serpent . . .” The devil slithered into the garden and tempted the pair with the one thing they didn’t have. Isn’t that just like him? Whatever we don’t have, the devil will tell us, “You’d be happy if . . .” He wants us to believe that God is holding out on us.

Unfortunately, the “you’d-be-happy-if” lie has introduced a destructive detour into many stories.

The devil launched his plan of deception in the garden by asking a question. “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” (Genesis 3:1, emphasis added).

Anytime we have a thought that essentially begins, “Did God really say,” we need to stop and ask, where did that thought come from? Many self-destructive decisions have begun with the question, “Did God really say?” Did God really say I shouldn’t watch that movie? Did God really say I shouldn’t reconnect with my old high school boyfriend on Facebook? Did God really say I shouldn’t spend money on . . . ?

Eve’s first mistake was engaging the serpent in conversation in the first place. “We may eat fruit from the tree s in the garden,” she said, “but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die’” ( vv. 2–3).

Satan’s next words are the first lie recorded in the Bible: “You will not certainly die” ( v. 4). In other words, God is not telling the truth. Sin has no consequences.
Satan went on to say, “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” ( v. 5). In other words, You can be your own god.

Eve bought what the devil was peddling and made a disastrous decision that led to the downfall of all creation. She ate…she gave it to her husband who was with her and he ate.
As soon as Adam and Eve sunk their teeth into the forbidden fruit, shame entered the world. The man and woman who were previously naked and felt no shame became the man and woman who cowered and were consumed by shame. Shame blanketed the earth and creation was never the same. And that’s where broken began.

Here’s the good news—Before everything fell apart, God had a plan to put it back together. Jesus, God’s Son, put on flesh and stepped into the human story so he could pay the price for our sins, conquer death, and restore our union and communion with God. “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8 NIV).

One day, the consequences of the fall will be reversed. Jesus will come again, and we will live in the New Jerusalem for all eternity. There will be no more tears, no more death, no more mourning, no more pain. He will make everything new. Broken will be no more.
If you are looking forward to that day, then click on comment and leave a shout out!
If you’re not sure that heaven is in your future, click here and let’s make sure.

Let’s Pray
God, thank You for sending Your Son to destroy the devil’s work and for making a way for us to leave the brokenness of this earth for the perfection of heaven. \
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn
Go back and read Genesis 2 and 3. What lies did the devil tell Eve that he is still telling us today?

Where Did I Put My Faith?
Mary Southerland

Today’s Truth
Without faith no one can please God. Anyone who comes to God must believe that He is real and that He rewards those who truly want to find Him (Hebrews 11:6, ICB).

Friend to Friend
Billy Graham once said, “Most of us do not understand nuclear fission, but we accept it. I don’t understand television, but I accept it. Why is it so easy to accept these man-made miracles and so difficult to accept the miracles of the Bible?” It’s a matter of faith.

Faith is the very foundation of our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us that without faith, we simply cannot please God. We must come to Him, believing that He is really who He says He is and that He really will do what He promises to do. That’s faith.

“Without faith no one can please God. Anyone who comes to God must believe that He is real and that He rewards those who truly want to find Him” (Hebrews 11:6, ICB).

There’s more!

God wants to reward those who come to Him with a seeking heart. God always loves a seeking heart, no matter how dirty or broken that heart may be.

Faith is the altar of powerful living. I often picture my Father watching with delight as I step into the unknown, walk straight through my fear, and trust Him to be there. I truly believe God loves dreamers, risk takers who are ready to take Him at His Word and walk by faith…not by sight.

When you get right down to it, our problem is not a lack of faith. Our problem is where we place our faith. Faith is more than just believing. Faith is acting on that belief.

The story is told of a woman who lived in a remote valley in Wales. When electricity came to the rural area, one of the first customers was a young woman with a large family. However, the electric company soon noticed that the woman was using a very small amount of electricity each month. Suspecting a problem with the installed equipment, they sent a repairman to check the meter. After a close inspection, the worker found the equipment was installed properly. Confused, the repairman knocked on the front door to give the woman his report. “We've inspected the meter which seems to be working properly. The only thing I can figure out is that you are not using the power that is available to you. Don't you use any electricity?" the repairman asked. "Oh yes" she said. “We turn it on every night to see how to light our oil lamps and then we switch it off again."

We often approach God's power in the same way, knowing it exists, but failing to appropriate all of the power God offers His children. Instead, we work diligently in our own strength until that strength is gone and we are left feeling empty and without purpose. That is not God’s heart. He wants to empower and strengthen us to follow His plan for our lives.

Faith is a constant challenge for me. Just when I think I have that lesson down, a crisis hits, and I find myself asking the same old question, “Where are you, God?” Been there? He knows. And He understands. Remember when Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before His crucifixion?

“He (Jesus) fell with his face to the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will’” (Matthew 26:39, NIV).

I can only imagine the pain and loneliness Jesus was feeling. He didn’t want to be crucified. It was a barbaric way to die! But He chose to walk by faith and obey God. Notice that God didn’t rebuke Him for His faltering faith, but God did strengthen Him to be obedient.

If you long to be a woman of faith, just take that first step of obedience. Plant that tiny seed of hope. Choose to doubt your doubts and believe God instead. Now you are walking in faith!

Let’s Pray
Father God, I pray that my heart and mind would be childlike in the matters of faith. I choose today to accept Your plan without always understanding that plan. I choose to trust You and not my circumstances. I want to be a woman of faith, Lord. I want to please You by stepping out in faith.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

Read James 2:14. Examine your life in light of the faith James describes in this verse.
What steps of obedience do you need to take in order to unleash your faith?

Today’s Truth
‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ (Matthew 3:3b, NIV)

Friend to Friend
John the Baptist told God’s people to “prepare the way for the Lord” … to purify their hearts and get ready for Jesus to come, redeem, restore, heal, love, challenge, and change the world. (Matthew 3:3)

I read this and smile because I like preparing things. I like to cook. I love hosting gatherings, planning party details, and preparing for guests. My son recently graduated from high school and I spent countless hours prepping for the celebration we had in his honor. It was wonderful.

When presidents, dignitaries, and heads of state are going to visit a particular town they often send people ahead of them to make sure the area is made ready for their visit. This is a different type of preparation than my domestic kind. They are serious to vet out each location regarding security. They vet out the people that will be in attendance and in charge. They prepare the way for those to whom they are in service.

John the Baptist “prepared the way” for Jesus much like this. He went to Jerusalem, all of Judea, and to the whole region of the Jordan telling the people of Israel to repent and prepare the way for Jesus by “making straight paths for Him.” (Matthew 3:6)

Prepare the way. Make straight paths.

Since these are not modern things to say, it is a smidge confusing, right?

I wondered about it, so I investigated a bit further. Here’s what I found out. The Strong’s Bible Concordance tells us that the word for “paths” in this verse is the Greek word tribos, which means, “a worn way.” (Strong’s Number G5147)

Worn.

Interesting.

When I think of things that are worn I think of things that are familiar. Known. Broken in. Comfortable.

I love my worn jeans and the well-worn path I walk on in the woods by my house. I love my worn leather shoes and my worn Bible.

As I think about this phrase further, a few thoughts cross my mind about a “worn way.”

When a path is worn it is easy to follow. Natural.

When a path is worn, it leads to a specific destination.

These observations cause me to reflect. Have I worn a path for my heart, soul, and mind to welcome and prioritize Jesus today?

Do my thought patterns, spiritual disciplines, and behaviors pave a worn path to truth and grace?

Do my actions “prepare the way” for others to encounter and wonder about Jesus?

Every life points somewhere. Mine will either point others toward Jesus or away from Him. Yours will too.

I want to be a worn-path-to-Jesus woman… but how?

I make straight paths for others to see Jesus when I am kind, when I am slow to anger, when I am quick to forgive and quick to listen. When I am compassionate, faithful, and humble.

I make straight paths for others to see Jesus when I am accessible and honest. When I choose His peace over my impatience and His joy over my frustrations.

I become the worn way for my loved ones, my co-workers, and community to see Jesus when I am influenced by and responsive to the ways He loves, shows compassion, and grace freely.

What a beautiful reminder: every day is an opportunity to influence others toward Jesus.

Let’s Pray
Dear Lord, Please purify my heart. Lead me in Your ways and make me a worn path to You!
In Jesus’s Name I pray,
Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn
What is one thing you can do today to prepare the way for your family, your work place and your community to see Jesus?

The Art of Intentionality
Gwen Smith

Today’s Truth
I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith… (Philippians 1:25, NIV)

Friend to Friend
When I was growing up, ours was on the doorframe between the kitchen and the hall with the red carpet. A vertical trail of penciled dashes and dates that marked the growth of my siblings and I – that eventually got painted over. An archive of ages and heights that proved physical progress was really happening in the Eisaman household.

And boy did I want my growth to show.

Each time my dad lined us up to draw lines just above our highest hairs, I would stretch my spine to the sky. (It's even possible that I might’ve lifted my heels occasionally. Possible. Just throwing it out there. Don’t judge me. Dad always bumped us back down.)

I loved seeing the tangible distance between where I used to be and where I was.

I loved seeing the evidence of advancement. Progress. Growth.

I still do.

In his letter to Timothy, Paul encouraged him to set an example to other believers in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity (1 Timothy 4:12). He also challenged his young protégé to devote himself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation (encouraging others), and to teaching.

He told Timothy to be intentional. Move forward in faith. Grow in such a way that it impacts others.

“Practice these things. Immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.” (1 Timothy 4:15)

I read this and I wonder. What type of spiritual progress can be seen in my life?

Am I setting an example in conduct… in the way I behave, react, respond and live?

Do I set an example for others in the words I use… in the ways I love… in my purity?

Do I reflect Jesus in these things?

Am I growing in His image?

These questions drive me to my knees. I’m forced to ask God to search me and know me – inside and out. I ask Him to show me the ways that I’ve grown and to show me the ways I still need to grow.

The progress I want to see in my life is no longer about a height chart - it’s about a depth chart. I want there to be visible evidence of my faith in Jesus that doesn’t waver in the winds or crumble in the uncomfortable. Don’t you?

Though our faith is unseen (Hebrews 6:1) let’s press on in progress and move forward in the hope, joy, love and peace of Christ so that others will be inspired to do the same.

Let’s live today in such a way that our behaviors, responses and attitudes showcase a vibrant, honest faith that’s deeply rooted and growing.

Let’s Pray
Dear Lord, Thank You for being so gracious and compassionate with me. Thank You for loving me where I used to be – in spite of me – and for loving me where I am today. Please forgive me for the times I try to move forward without You. Help me to prioritize progress and seek You continually so that others will clearly see You in me.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn
Read Philippians 1.

How does the beginning of this letter to the people of Philippi that was written long, long ago stir you toward growing in Christ today? Grab your journal and write a prayer of response.

I Want to Be a Bummer Lamb
Mary Southerland

Today’s Truth
The stone that the builders rejected became the cornerstone (Psalm 118;22, NCV).

Friend to Friend
I want to be a bummer lamb. Now I know what you are thinking but stay with me. I have been fascinated with sheep since I was a little girl. We lived on a farm and I really did have a little lamb. My daddy gave me that lamb. Actually, it was a trade. I was having trouble giving up my bottle. And daddy said the poor little lamb didn’t have any way to eat. So, I traded my bottle for the lamb. A sweet deal all around. And a fascination with sheep was born.

While reading an article about sheep, I discovered an interesting fact about sheep. Ewes will occasionally give birth to a lamb … and then reject it. If that lamb is returned to the ewe, the mother wants nothing to do with the lamb and may even kick the poor lamb away. Evidently, once an ewe rejects one of her lambs, she will never change her mind. Sheep are stubborn critters.

These lambs hang their heads so low that it looks like something is wrong with its neck. But there isn’t. Their spirit is simply broken. These lambs are called bummer lambs. The lamb will die unless the Shepherd intervenes.

Do you know what the Shepherd does? He adopts that little lamb. The Shepherd takes the lamb everywhere He goes. He hand-feeds it and keeps it warm by the fire. He wraps it in a blanket and holds it to His chest so the bummer lamb can hear his heartbeat. When the bummer lamb is old enough and strong enough, the Shepherd returns it to the flock.

But that lamb – now a sheep – never forgets what the Shepherd did for him. When the Shepherd calls his flock, guess who runs to Him first? Yes – the bummer sheep.

Why?

Because the bummer sheep immediately recognizes the Shepherd’s voice. He had grown from being a rejected lamb to being a chosen sheep. I wonder if the bummer lamb was loved more than all the other sheep. No. It is just that the little lamb knew the Shepherd intimately. He had grown up hearing the Shepherd’s voice and listening to the Shepherds heartbeat. Because he was rejected, the bummer lamb – the broken lamb, knew the Shepherd in a way none of the other sheep did.

You may be broken and rejected today. You may feel like a bummer lamb. Rejoice! The Good Shepherd will gather you in His arms and hold you close so you can hear His very heartbeat. And you can rest there until you are healed and whole again.

Let’s Pray
Father, I am broken and rejected. Unloved and unwanted. And then you came into my life and made me whole. Thank You, Lord, for what You have done. Your love saved me. Your grace covered me. I am Yours. Help me hear Your voice above all the rest … and I will come to You.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn
One of my favorite worship songs is “Come to the Altar.” Find some time to spend alone with God and let the truths of these lyrics sink into your soul.

Are you hurting and broken within?
Overwhelmed by the weight of your sin?
Jesus is calling.

Have you come to the end of yourself?
Do you thirst for a drink from the well?
Jesus is calling.

O come to the altar
The Father's arms are open wide.
Forgiveness was bought with
The precious blood of Jesus Christ

Leave behind your regrets and mistakes.
Come today, there's no reason to wait.

Jesus is calling.

Bring your sorrows and trade them for joy
From the ashes, a new life is born
Jesus is calling.

Oh, what a Savior
Isn't He wonderful?
Sing hallelujah, Christ is risen
Bow down before Him…
