We come to the point when the wait was over, when the Father kept His promise. And we will see that the disciples had no need to wonder if this moment was worth the wait. All together in one place, they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. And we must pray and study to understand what that great moment for them means for us.

In the last message, we saw that the first congregation was devoted to prayer to God, and that goes hand in hand with what we turn to see now: They were directed by the written Word of God.

In our study of Acts, we are looking at the formation of the fledgling Church with its first congregation. From the beginning, they needed to be sure of who they were and how they were going to do this together. To see this for ourselves, we are looking at their directional obedience and their devotion to prayer.

What acts, by what means, for what purpose? Luke gives the introductory answer—the overarching answer. What Jesus said to the Apostles here unfolds in the rest of the book and is necessary for our faithfulness to Him.

The book of Acts is the ancient history of the New Testament Church. It is a historical record of actions to which we owe our eternal lives and existence as the present-day Church. And the importance of understanding this book as historical truth is established by Luke in the opening verses.

We see in today’s passage how Jesus showed His first disciples that His resurrection is not fantastic fiction but the most fantastic truth. His truth as the God-Man far surpasses the fantasies of man’s fiction. They thought that what they were seeing of Him was beyond belief, but this is exactly what we need to believe.

We too often do not see the Lord in what He is doing. Not only do we not recognize what He is doing, but we also do not recognize Him in what He is doing. We see this problem clearly with two men who were looking right at Him without really seeing Him.

Even while the disciples believed in Jesus, they had not fully understood and embraced everything that He had told them. And we need to understand how much harder that made the crucifixion for them. We need to understand the anticipation in which they could have carried on—anticipation of that incredible moment on that glad morning.

From the earliest days of its settlement, two opposing forces, good and evil, have been clashing for the shaping and possession of this nation. We can clearly see this clash throughout its past, and we can clearly see this clash still in the present. And we must soberly consider, what will be its future?

We need to understand that what we are looking at here is the epicenter of God’s redemptive revelation and work. Everything in our faith proceeds from and points to this truth. So, let’s think carefully about what they were seeing and what we are seeing.
