Today we begin a short study of a beautiful miracle in the healing of a lame beggar, and as God raised this man up off the ground, may He raise this truth up off the page to raise our hearts up above the trials of this world. And with His truth preached, may He raise someone up to walk with Him in newness of life.

With verse 42, Luke transitions from the day of Pentecost to the many days after Pentecost with this summary of how they were functioning as a devoted congregation of disciples. And then in the following verses, Luke gives to us this great snapshot of life after Pentecost. And as God blessed them, may He also bless us.

Understanding that this Jesus is the point of Spirit-filled preaching, we must then understand the necessary point of consequence in preaching Him. In raising Him up as who He really is, God has put in front of this world a clear ultimatum that it cannot escape. We see this from Peter in what he said where we left off in the last message. Now, we see what happened to those that heard Him.

The lead pastor of that first church was certainly Spirit-filled as he took his stand and declared to the crowd the meaning of Pentecost for all mankind. As we continue with his sermon, we learn from him the defining point of Spirit-filled preaching, which is “This Jesus”.

We come back to this great moment to see how it went beyond the room they were in. What the Holy Spirit did was specifically with them, but the impact was not isolated to them. As we study what happened next, we need to consider this: If God suddenly does something great with us, what is the impact supposed to be, and do we know how to put the focus on Him, not taking the attention for ourselves?

We come to the point when the wait was over, when the Father kept His promise. And we will see that the disciples had no need to wonder if this moment was worth the wait. All together in one place, they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. And we must pray and study to understand what that great moment for them means for us.

In our study of Acts, we are looking at the formation of the fledgling Church with its first congregation. From the beginning, they needed to be sure of who they were and how they were going to do this together. To see this for ourselves, we are looking at their directional obedience and their devotion to prayer.

The book of Acts is the ancient history of the New Testament Church. It is a historical record of actions to which we owe our eternal lives and existence as the present-day Church. And the importance of understanding this book as historical truth is established by Luke in the opening verses.
