We go from the shame Jesus despised to the joy set before Him. “At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light, and the burden of my heart rolled away”—today we look at a man who can truly testify with those words—who can say, “On my cross, on my cross…”

We have at last arrived where we have been going with Jesus this entire time of the last three years, 10 ½ months: at the cross. And we must see the shame of His crucifixion. I take the title of this message from Hebrews 12:2, telling us that He “endured the cross, despising the shame.”

Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him before Judas knew. Jesus called Judas with His eyes wide open to what was coming. And in today’s passage, it all comes to a head for us to see that Judas’ betrayal of Jesus being determined did not make it any less despicable.

We do not like sudden shifts that make things more difficult. With every shift, we must reevaluate our trust in God. Likewise, the apostles knew that they had a good thing going with Jesus, but things had shifted. And things were shifting more.
