A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

A young man applying for his first job was asked, “How much experience do you have?” His answer was, well none, I just got my degree but I learn fast. In life, experience comes in small steps, each taking us ever closer to maturity in whatever it is we are doing. Consider the disciples of Jesus; they had no idea what their job descriptions were until they were trained by the Master. Although you think you have little to offer, consider becoming an apprentice for Christ. No telling where He may take you.

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17 (NIV)

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

When you feel down, it may help to consider the various ways you have been blessed in your life. As the old hymn says, “Count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.” Take a little time each day to reflect on the blessings in your life; be they big or small. By practicing gratitude in this way, it may help you to see life through a more thankful lens.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3 (NIV)

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

So many spend their lives struggling to gain wealth and stuff, when all they acquire is stress and headaches without contentment in the end. Our verses today are a foundational biblical passage as they pertain to the true meaning of wealth, emphasizing that spiritual richness and peace come from being satisfied with the absolute necessities of life. Paul is saying that true wealth isn't about accumulating material goods, but about living a life devoted to God (godliness) while being completely satisfied with what you have (contentment).

The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, “…godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” 1 Timothy 6:6-8

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

Have you ever had a conversation with someone who never stops talking? They talk so much you can’t respond to what they are saying. Praying for many of us is a lot like that; we keep talking to God but we don’t stop to listen for his voice. In our prayers and petitions it is important to pause and listen for him.

‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ Jeremiah 33:3

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

In ancient biblical times, knowing a person's name meant truly knowing their character, reputation, and nature. To "know the name of the Lord" means understanding that God is loving, just, and reliable. It goes far beyond simply knowing the word "God."

“Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.”
Psalm 9:10 (NIV)

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

There is an old saying, “A person without a plan, plans to fail.” It is not uncommon for us to set forth plans for our lives. However, while people can make numerous plans and have ambitions, it is ultimately God’s purpose and will that prevails. It is a reminder of God’s divine sovereignty over human desires, emphasizing that while it is wise to make plans, the final outcome rests with God.

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart,
but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.”
Proverbs 19:21 (NIV)

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

This well-loved verse offers comfort during times of grief, heartbreak, and emotional distress. It assures you that God is not distant when you are hurting. He is actively attentive and present in your pain. If you are grieving, rather than going through your grief alone, draw near to the Lord.

“The LORD is near to the broken-hearted,
and saves the crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 (NRSV)

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

Ask yourself, “Who is my neighbor?” Most Americans live in communities where they are most comfortable and most likely populated by people much themselves. Now ask yourself, “Who am I willing to exclude from my community?” If your answer is based on race, nationality, or other criteria, perhaps you ought to be asking, “Who am I?” Jesus did not just tell people to love each other; He set a new, radically high standard—to love as He loved.

Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34 (NIV)

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

A while ago I talked about the importance of having a personal relationship with God. This verse is a powerful, personal declaration of faith. It encourages you to daily choose to rely on God as your source of protection and security. It moves the believer beyond just a general belief in a higher power; it speaks of an intimate, personal, and unwavering confidence that God is actively protecting you.

“I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
Psalm 91:2

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

There seems to be a lot of judging going around these days. It seems all to easy to accuse and label those we know little about because they may not be as accomplished as us, look different or speak differently; we assume the worst about them. In our verses today Jesus is condemning hypocritical judgment—where a person harshly criticizes the flaws of others while ignoring or excusing their own flaws. The instruction is to deal with your own moral or spiritual issues before attempting to correct someone else's.

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Matthew 7:1-2 (NIV)
