“Never A Bad Time To Do The Right Thing”

One of those questions that many of us struggle with is, “should I help that person”? The answer is yes! How we help them may be another issue, but it is always the right time to help others. This is one of the most powerful ways that we can share the love of Christ with others. No deed is too small or too big to make a difference in someone’s world and, most importantly, in our lives. God uses these opportunities to shape and mold us along the path of our spiritual journey. In today’s Gospel reading, we find Jesus healing a man on the Sabbath. Knowing that He was about to be challenged, Jesus poses a question, “is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil”? What we must embrace is that the failure to do the right thing is wrong. There is never a bad time to do the right thing.

On a certain sabbath Jesus went into the synagogue and taught,
and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.
The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely
to see if he would cure on the sabbath
so that they might discover a reason to accuse him.
But he realized their intentions
and said to the man with the withered hand,
“Come up and stand before us.”
And he rose and stood there.
Then Jesus said to them,
“I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the sabbath
rather than to do evil,
to save life rather than to destroy it?”
Looking around at them all, he then said to him,
“Stretch out your hand.”
He did so and his hand was restored.
But they became enraged
and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.

“The Law Is Love”

The law of God is love. The desires of the flesh are selfishness and pride. We have to choose one over the other, as it is impossible to appeal to both. To love has nothing to do with like and sadly, too many people equate the two as semi-equal. We are called to love our neighbor, love our enemy, love our family, and love our God. Love conquers all, even the dislike we may have for someone. In today’s second reading, Saint Paul tells us that if we love one another, we have fulfilled the law. Why? Because the love of God has conquered everything that stood to separate us from Him. Now He calls you and I, through love, to conquer everything that separates us from one another so that we might present ourselves to Him as a living sacrifice. May we learn to live the law of love by living His example.

Brothers and sisters:
Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another;
for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery;
you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet, ”
and whatever other commandment there may be,
are summed up in this saying, namely,
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Love does no evil to the neighbor;
hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.

“Which Came First”

All too often we see the law of God as something that stands in our way. We need to understand that the law was made for man, and man was not made for the law. Why is this so important? Understanding which came first and who they were made for helps us come to terms with the purpose. Man was made for God; therefore, we serve God. The law was made for man; therefore, the law serves man. In today’s Gospel, Jesus is dealing with just this issue and teaches us through this lesson to embrace the law for its purpose in our lives.

While Jesus was going through a field of grain on a sabbath,
his disciples were picking the heads of grain,
rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.
Some Pharisees said,
“Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?”
Jesus said to them in reply,
“Have you not read what David did
when he and those who were with him were hungry?
How he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering,
which only the priests could lawfully eat,
ate of it, and shared it with his companions?”
Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”

Psalm 28:7
“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped.”

When your strength is gone, God Himself becomes your strength.
When fear surrounds you, He becomes your shield.
Faith is not the absence of trouble; it is choosing to trust God in the middle of it.
David says, “My heart trusted in Him,” and that trust produced divine help.
You may feel weak today, but your weakness does not limit God’s strength.
Trust Him, and you will discover that the God who protects you is also the God who strengthens you.

“A Time To Feast”

I often hear people speaking of doom and gloom. I choose to live in joy and peace. Why? Because of the love and grace that has been poured out upon us by the Lord. We have been called to live in His glory and in His presence. We have been welcomed into the living presence of the one who created all things. How can we not celebrate such a wonderful opportunity, and the good news is that this is an eternal opportunity? Today’s Gospel reminds us of the time in which we live. A time of gathering for the feast of salvation. Now is not the time for concern; rather, it is a time for celebration.

The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus,
“The disciples of John the Baptist fast often and offer prayers,
and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same;
but yours eat and drink.”
Jesus answered them, “Can you make the wedding guests fast
while the bridegroom is with them?
But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
then they will fast in those days.”
And he also told them a parable.
“No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one.
Otherwise, he will tear the new
and the piece from it will not match the old cloak.
Likewise, no one pours new w**e into old w**eskins.
Otherwise, the new w**e will burst the skins,
and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined.
Rather, new w**e must be poured into fresh w**eskins.
And no one who has been drinking old w**e desires new,
for he says, ‘The old is good.’”

“Ownership”

Whose is it anyway? What is the “it” we are asking about? Anything and everything. God is the one who created the earth and the sky, the land and the sea, the birds and the animals, humanity and everything that is. We have been given dominion (stewardship) of these things, yet they all belong to God. How we manage these things is evidence of our love of God. To love God is to love His creation in all that we do and to give thanks to Him for the provision of life that He has placed before us since the beginning of time. Today’s responsorial reminds us that, “To the Lord belongs the earth and all that fills it”. Let us rejoice in the blessings of this day and give thanks to Him who has made it possible.

The LORD’s are the earth and its fullness;
the world and those who dwell in it.
For he founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.
R. To the Lord belongs the earth and all that fills it.
Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD?
or who may stand in his holy place?
He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean,
who desires not what is vain.
R. To the Lord belongs the earth and all that fills it.
He shall receive a blessing from the LORD,
a reward from God his savior.
Such is the race that seeks for him,
that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.

“God’s Chosen”

Who are God’s chosen people? This question has many answers depending upon the context in which it is asked. Adam and Eve were God’s chosen. The descendants of Abraham were God’s chosen. You and I are God’s chosen. We know this because Jesus tells us that we are all chosen by God and that it is the heart of God that all might be saved, and none might be lost. The question that really needs to be answered is who has chosen God? These will be the ones who are saved. In today’s psalm we are reminded that, “blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be His own”. You have been chosen, and you are blessed. Will you choose God and truly live?

Blessed the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people he has chosen for his own inheritance.
From heaven the LORD looks down;
he sees all mankind.
R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.
From his fixed throne he beholds
all who dwell on the earth,
He who fashioned the heart of each,
he who knows all their works.
R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.
Our soul waits for the LORD,
who is our help and our shield,

“Strength And Authority”

So often we try to create strength through the exercise of our physical and/or emotional self. Although we may become physically or emotionally stronger, there are fleeting issues as they can fade away. The only source of true strength and authority is from the Lord. He offers Himself to us to be our strength and authority. In today’s Gospel we see Jesus display these attributes as He exercises a man who is possessed. Jesus also tells us that we too will do these things in His name. It is in the name of Jesus that all strength and authority reside.

Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee.
He taught them on the sabbath,
and they were astonished at his teaching
because he spoke with authority.
In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon,
and he cried out in a loud voice,
“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!”
Then the demon threw the man down in front of them
and came out of him without doing him any harm.
They were all amazed and said to one another,
“What is there about his word?
For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits,
and they come out.”
And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.
