As we observe Memorial Day 2026, small flags line the gravesites of veterans throughout Rockville Cemetery — a quiet reminder of service, sacrifice, and remembrance.

Throughout the Cemetery, more than 450 veterans of many generations rest among us, from conflicts long past to more recent times. While Memorial Day especially honors those who gave their lives in military service, we also pause to recognize the broader community of veterans whose service shaped our nation and whose memory remains part of our shared story.

In preparation for Memorial Day, volunteers — young and older, including two veterans — helped place flags at veterans’ gravesites throughout the Cemetery, continuing a simple but meaningful tradition of care and gratitude.

Whether you visit a loved one, place flowers, pause beside a veteran’s marker, or simply take a quiet moment of reflection, we invite you to remember all who served — and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We wish everyone a meaningful and reflective Memorial Day.

With all due respects to those celebrating Mother’s Day, this May 10th also marks the 25th Anniversary of the incorporation of the current Rockville Cemetery Association (RCA). In 2001 several concerned local citizens joined to establish and lead this non-profit organization to restore the proper function, aesthetic appeal, and respectful dignity of the city’s most historic burial ground. During these next 25 years, as Rockville Cemetery approaches its 300th Anniversary, the mission of RCA can only continue through the efforts of a new generation of volunteer citizen stewards who serve on its board of directors. Please contact RCA through our website if you would like to contribute your time and talents to help preserve this treasured burial landscape, support this perpetual care cemetery, and continue its service to our community.

Born this date in 1833, Rebecca Thomas Biays Veirs is interred alongside several of her family members in the upper area of the cemetery she tirelessly supported. During a period in the late 1800s and into the 20th century, when woman had yet to achieve the right to vote, Ms. Veirs used her keen business sense and social prominence in the Rockville community to organize and help lead the original Rockville Cemetery Association of Montgomery County, MD; restoring the function, dignity, and respectful appearance of the town’s most historic public burial ground.

At Rockville Cemetery, the recent snow still rests lightly while wild crocuses rise through it. In this quiet threshold between seasons, winter lingers, spring stirs.

Against the softened shapes of the cemetery beyond, the crocuses offer a small but unmistakable perennial promise: that the season is turning, gently and in its own time.

Rockville Cemetery’s location was originally selected circa 1739 for the site of a humble Chapel of Ease serving Prince George’s [Episcopal] Parish. By the end of the 1800s, this expanding cemetery would be shared among several different Christian churches active in the community. So it is likely safe to assume that, for almost three centuries, no occasion has been recognized throughout its grounds more than Christmas. In the spirit of this much-revered observance, Rockville Cemetery Association wishes everyone the peace, comfort, remembrances, and reunions desired during this season, with best wishes to all families for a healthy and prosperous New Year.
