THE ELEVENTH STATION: Jesus is Nailed to the Cross

The soldiers lay Jesus down on the Cross and drive heavy nails through His hands and His feet so that He can no longer move. They move the Cross to a hole in the ground and set it upright, and Jesus hangs on the Cross that He has carried, crucified between two thieves.

Even now, Jesus forgives the soldiers and the people who were making fun of Him and shouting at Him, and He prays to His Father, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Lord, grant us perseverance that we may never stop seeking you. Let us seek His forgiveness in the Sacrament of today. His mercy is limitless.

From Our Pastor, Fr. Paul D. Lee
Fifth Sunday of Lent

“Lazarus. Come Out!”

The chilling line often attributed to Joseph Stalin, “A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic,” exposes something deeply broken in the human heart. We can grasp the pain of one grieving family, one lost child, one empty chair at the table. But when suffering multiplies into the tens of thousands, our minds falter. The scale overwhelms us, and tragedy becomes a number on a screen. Yet behind every number is a face, a name, a story known to God.

Today, the world is awash in such staggering numbers. In Gaza, more than 70,000–75,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7, 2023, and over 171,000 have been injured. In Ukraine and Russia, combined casualties may reach two million by the spring of 2026. Across Africa, armed conflicts since 1989 have claimed more than two million lives. These barbaric and senseless wars drag entire peoples into the abyss of violence, extinguishing countless innocent lives.

Pope Leo XIV warns that the “logic of war” is returning with frightening force, a fashionable relapse into power politics that discards international law in favor of domination and deterrence. Echoing Pope Francis, he insists that “war is always a defeat” and that “nothing is lost with peace; everything can be lost with war.” These are not abstract statements; they are moral alarms.

What is especially troubling is the hardened inability to repent among criminals, tyrants, and warmongers. Their refusal to acknowledge guilt corrodes their moral vision. It is as if a spiritual paralysis has overtaken them, an inner deadness that blinds them to the dignity of others and even to their own humanity. This paralysis enables everything from street crimes to war crimes, from corruption to cruelty, all committed with chilling disregard for the immeasurable worth of human life.

But they do not have the final word. God does. Every person who dies in violence, injustice, or neglect is received by the God who sees what the world ignores. Death may appear final, but for Christians it is not terminal—it is liminal, a threshold into a new stage of life. As St. Paul proclaims with confidence: “If the Spirit of the One who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, then the One who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through His Spirit dwelling in you” (Romans 8:11). This is the hope that breaks through the darkness.

In recent Sundays, we have seen Jesus open new possibilities: offering living water to a Samaritan woman, restoring sight to a man born blind. Today, He goes further still. He stands before the tomb of His friend and cries out: “Lazarus, come out!” And then He commands the community: “Untie him and let him go.” Jesus confronts death directly, and death yields. He reveals Himself as the Lord of life, the One who calls every human being out of darkness, out of despair, out of the tombs we create or endure.

If He is the Lord of life, then we must be agents of life. We reject the logic of violence and war. We refuse to let cynicism or numbness dictate our response to human suffering. Learning from the Lord, we invest our energy and resources in what builds up: human dignity, reconciliation, justice, and the slow, steady work of peace. We commit ourselves to the civilization of love and life, becoming instruments of the Kingdom of God.

Through the indwelling Spirit, we are freed from the bo***ge of sin, fear, and even death itself. Jesus wants to untie us—our hearts, our habits, our despair—so that we may walk in the freedom of His mercy.

Let us plunge into that life-restoring mercy.
Let us stand with those who suffer.
Let us refuse to let any human being become a statistic.

And may the Lord bring consolation, courage, and hope to all who live in the shadow of death.

Padre Paul D. Lee

THE TENTH STATION: Jesus is Stripped of His Clothes

Jesus finally comes to the place where He will be crucified. The soldiers tear away His clothing from His wounded body and Jesus, humiliated, stands now before the crowd with no possessions at all. The soldiers take His clothes and divide them up among themselves.

Lord, grant us merciful hearts that we may bring your reconciliation and forgiveness to all. By starting with our own , we pray that we can bring that grace to others. for you this : thelightison.org
