Pastors James and Amanda were gone this weekend visiting family, and ROL was so pleased to have Breanna Schwartz, new Director of the local Lifewise Academy in AC share about the upcoming plans and how things are progressing. She would love to come and share at your church, Bible Study, or group about the vision and the need. Feel free to reach out for more information, and support this great opportunity to include Biblical teaching for public school students that have interest. More information coming out in the weeks and months ahead.

Pastor James shared this morning about another Dangerous Doctrine that has seeped into many segments of culture, including the church. Secular Humanism, which was first coined (as a word) in the 1930's and within a decade the Archbishop of Canterbury declared that Christianity would be undermined by the move to "retain Christian values without Christian faith". He was spot one, and sadly today, a Who's Who List of people claiming to be Humanists (or Secular Humanists) have wrought themselves into every major institution of society. John Dewey, amid the modern school system; Bill Nye, beloved "science guy"; August Compte, father of modern sociology; and Mark Twain, famed author is a very short list of recognizable and influential names. The easiest understanding of the Humanist is a reversal of Genesis 1:1. Rather than God creating......the humanist declares that man created God. The continued thought leads to innate goodness within each of us as humanity, so we put our faith and trust in ourselves to better the world around us. And we fail, because innately we are wicked and NOT good. We desperately need a Savior. These sneaky teachings have manipulated many modern pulpits and halls of higher education, and impacted social agendas dramatically over the last half-century. Why 50 years? Because Frances Schaeffer, in 1976, proclaimed that if we (Christians and the church) did not address the issue of humanism, it would find its' way into the modern tenets of fundamental preaching. It has, from modern understanding of social justice, to radical feminism, to abortion, and homosexuality, and nearly every "hot button" topic of the day, the modern (and post-modern) thought and narrative are written in part from the humanist vantage of thinking. "Science, math, and philosophy are the elements to reach full truth. Religion may or may not be OK, but just keep it in its' place", touts the humanist today, blinded from seeing the Truth found only in Jesus Christ. Lord, please re-take our pulpits and lecterns and homes and classrooms with the truth found only in You and Your Word. Blessings.

Pastor James continued the series of Dangerous Doctrines this morning talking about the Material Gospel. God desires to prosper His people, but doctrine for many erroneously places an emphasis solely on prospering financially. This has come about from the New Thought movement and arisen within the Western church in the last 100-150 years. The word prosper is used 48 times in the KJV and approximately 37 times in other translations. The Hebrew word is defined as "push forward, break out, be good, be profitable". The Greek word is defined as "help along the road". Financial situations and material things CAN be a part of this, but 3 John 2 shows us that God's desire is you prospering internally first and foremost (that your soul would prosper; as a believer, your spirit is already prospering). In studying 11 different older commentaries (Matthew Henry, Adam Clarke, Albert Barnes, Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown, to name just a few....) only ONE even mentioned prosper in context of finances. Let's go deeper: prosperity is in the KJV version 17 times and EVERY time the context is one of having peace, or bringing peace. God is OK with blessing people with finances, and if you are especially blessed that way, congratulations. Please obey the Lord and steward that well. But we have to break away from the dangers of teaching that God wants every believer to drive (fill in the blank with a fancy car or truck brand/model) and have overflowing bank accounts and pocketbooks. We are missing the full teaching of Scripture to look at prospering in our lives solely through the financial lens. I pray 2 Corinthians 8:9 in your lives today, and that God would continue to help you along the road, to push you forward, to break out on your behalf, to raise up good in your life, and help you be profitable. It's even the final part of the definition, which could indicate it's place in our lives as well. So much truth in this teaching. Get Pastor's notes today. May the Lord richly BLESS and PROSPER all of you.

Pastor James continued this morning with Dangerous Doctrines of our Day. We discussed the Political Gospel this morning, and the idea that if we just get everything right with the government and political system, then it will all be OK. Politics and good policies and laws don't save people. Jesus saves people. Don't misunderstand. We are blessed to be able to be so involved in our political system (and as Christians, especially, you should be involved), but we cannot replace the gospel with other policies. Righteousness exalts the nation (vote for good people that will vote according to what God said), but sin is a reproach to any people. (Proverbs 14:34). Remember this: voting right may alter a course, but a right heart will alter eternity. Have good politics and be involved, but don't confuse "fixing" things politically within the nation as solving the desperate need we have of repenting of our sins and following Jesus as our ONLY Lord and Savior.

Pastor James continued this morning on the Dangerous Doctrines series. Today's will hit home for many as it is a popular doctrine promoted but not fully Biblically sound. The Bible assures us that we are saved when we place our faith completely in Him and the sacrifice He made upon the cross. We study the doctrine of salvation (soteriology) and the BIble is clear that we are held in the palm of God's hand (John 10) and no man can pluck us out. Nothing is rendered about one who could choose to remove themselves. There are so many Scriptures to bring together to see this well if you've believed other teaching. The Scriptures show us Eternal Security in Christ but it is overstated to suggest that means Once Saved, Always Saved. James 5:19-20 is written to brethren (believers, church) about one wandering from the truth and the exhortation to bring them back. There is concern when a saved individual begins to walk away from God and His way. So many doctrines exist today on this subject. Some suggest that one dying with any unconfessed sin sends them to hell, others suggest universalism, or that none go to hell, and others even suggest that heaven is theory and that we are living here to the fullest. The Bible is clear when we study it thoroughly however. It's not to bring uncertainty to the life of the believer, but rather encouragement to continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12). Here are more passages if you feel uncertain on this issue:
Jude 3, 12-13, 20-21, 24-25 / Proverbs 21:16 / 2 Peter 2:20-22 / Ezekiel 3:20 / Luke 12: 37-48, esp. 47-48 / 2 Timothy 2:12 / Hebrews 13:16 / Titus 1:6 / James 2 (faith & works) / Matthew 7:15 / John 10:28-29 / Ephesians 2:8-9 / 1 Corinthians 3:15 / Exodus 12-17, compared with 1 Corinthians 10 and Jude 5 / Hebrews 3: 12-19 / Romans 11:17-23 / Hebrews 6:4-6 / 1 Corinthians 9:27 / 2 Corinthians 11:3 / 2 Thessalonians / Matthew 24 / 2 Timothy 1:12 / 1 Peter 4:19 / 2 Timothy 4:7-8

Pastor James began a new series today entitled Dangerous Doctrines of our Day and taught about Multiple Wives, which has grown in prominence throughout the last several years. Nowhere in Scripture is this commended, though it clearly was culturally acceptable. We are NOT saved to be a part of the worldly culture, but rather are saved OUT of it and need to REPENT from it. There are at least five reasons Biblically why 'multiple wives teaching' is unsound and unwise. They include: nowhere in Scripture is the example utilized without major problems coming from it (Abraham-Sarah-Hagar/David/Solomon), God discouraged/commanded against it in both Testaments (Deuteronomy 17; 1 Timothy 3: Titus 1), and we are supposed to be like Christ, who is awaiting One Bride.

Nugget Sunday again at ROL as Susie Rippetoe and Pastor Amanda Damon shared. Susie taught on the importance of avoiding divination and witchcraft in our lives, amidst a culture that sneaks elements of divination and witchcraft into entertainment and everyday living with regularity. But the Bible clearly prohibits involvement with such things. Pastor Amanda encouraged us to ask ourselves what is our process when we feel the enemy attacking, or when we feel overwhelmed with things in our life. Do we run to the Word of God? Into His Presence? Lift our hands and heads and hearts and praise and worship the King of Kings? If we run to other sources, we will only delay the breakthroughs from these moments/seasons in our lives. We closed by praying over each other in the Body. Such a good time with the Lord as we gather.

Nugget Sunday today at ROL. Peter Rippetoe reminded us of the importance of everyone being saved. We don't make it just because we go to church or from the lives and blessings of others. We are saved when we have turned from our wicked sins and accepted the amazing sacrifice of Jesus, dying on a cross to redeem us for eternity (John 3:16 & Romans 10:9-10). Lois Schenker ministered about the widow who gave all she had. In natural terms she gave far less than most (or all) others there, but in obeying God and giving all she had, she became a testimony for all eternity of a heart fully given over to the King, and trusting Him in everything and for everything! Join us tonight for a delicious smoked meal and Family Game Night, 6pm, at River of Life.
