Borscht Belt Breakfast
Whether you stayed in any one of the more than 500 hotels or 50,000 kuchaleins that dotted Sullivan County, when you recall spending your summers in “the country” or “the mountains,” the memories evoke something unique. On April 10, more than 60 members enjoyed a bagel brunch sponsored by Dr. Larry and Lisa Mack, and conversation was prompted by the centerpieces which featured photos of the hotels. After brunch, Co-President Linda Schwartz introduced speaker Marisa Scheinfeld, photographer and author of The Borscht Belt: revisiting the remains of America’s Jewish vacationland.
Ms. Scheinfeld discussed the history of the Catskills, including the Leni Lenape tribe, the artists inspired by the scenery, the industries that arose, and the area’s evolution from a place full of restricted hotels (“No Jews or Dogs”) to a virtual paradise for generations of Jews yearning for relief from city summers and a sample of the American dream. That dream included swimming pools, endless food, dance lessons, world-class entertainment, and chances for romance. It was not unusual to see celebrities, sports figures, and noted people like Eleanor Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr. After talking about the hotels in their heyday, she shared photographs she took of the modern ruins that were the result of abandonment, bankruptcy, and changing tastes. No wishing to leave her audience on a sad note, she also talked about the Renaissance of the area, which included condominiums, revitalized towns, and casinos.
When the lecture ended, attendees shared memories of how they or their parents met their spouses on vacation, working in the dining room, and the extensive menus.
Co-Presidents Alyce Goodstein and Linda Schwartz thank volunteers Lisa Mack, Bonnie Friedman, Jill Kaplan, Sharon Friend, Florence Lubitz, Barbara Kaplan, Karen Skolnick, Sharon Friend, Samantha Berman-Melendez, CeCe Friedman, Elisa Matas-Skolnick, Sandy Friedman, and Tracey Simon.
Anyone interested in purchasing a copy of Ms. Scheinfeld’s book can do so here: https://cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501700590/the-borscht-belt/ =1. Use discount code 09FLYER.

The Borscht Belt, which features essays by Stefan Kanfer and Jenna Weissman Joselit, presents Marisa Scheinfeld's photographs of abandoned sites where resorts, hotels, and bungalow colonies once boomed in the Catskill Mountain region of upstate New York.

SISTERHOOD RAISES THE CURTAIN ON “BROADWAY ON ZOOM” WITH CANTOR WEISER
Theater-starved members of CBSBD were treated to a buffet of Broadway musicals when Sisterhood presented “Broadway on Zoom,” starring our own Cantor Alexandra Weiser, on Monday, January 31. A classically trained soprano, Cantor Weiser, accompanied by her friend and former instructor Pedro d’Aquino on piano, sang ethereal renditions of familiar, and not so familiar, songs written by “Jewish and Jewish-adjacent composers and lyricists.”
Sisterhood Co-President Alyce Goodstein announced that more than 95 individuals and families were attending via Zoom. The audience made up for the performers being unable to hear their applause with their comments and responses in the “Chat” feature, including “Goosebumps!,” “Amazing!,” and multiple “Yasher Koachs!”
Against a virtual background of Sardi’s restaurant, Cantor Weiser opened the show with Do I Hear a Waltz from the show of the same name. Other songs included Til There Was You, Look to the Rainbow, I Could’ve Danced All Night, and everyone’s “favorite song to be miserable to,” On My Own from “Les Misérables.” While Cantor Weiser took a little break, Mr. d’Aquino entertained with a lovely instrumental medley from “West Side Story.” The show closed with Children Will Listen from the late Stephen Sondheim musical, “Into the Woods.” After pleas from the audience for an encore, Cantor Weiser finished with You’ll Never Walk Alone,” which she said has become the “Zoom anthem.”
Before the evening ended, Sisterhood Co-President Alyce Goodstein reminded the audience of Sisterhood’s upcoming programs, including a lecture by Jill Kaplan on the Chagall Windows and the annual Purim Basket fundraiser. She also invited those attending to join Sisterhood.
