Hillside Church

Hillside Church We exist to be a refuge, drawing ourselves and others into a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. The mission of Hillside Church is centered on the Gospel.

In a world full of influences and difficulty, our heart is to stay true to the words of Jesus in what we know and how we treat people. People are often wounded or find themselves alone. Our mission is to be a refuge, which is simply a safe place or shelter from daily life in the world. In being a shelter, we long to share the truth of the Gospel for any who would come because we believe the Gospel

changes lives and a relationship with Jesus means everything to any person who would desire to know God. Check us out on the Faithlife app by going to the app store and downloading Faithlife. This song was written by Stephen McWhirter. You may not have heard his name before, but his story of redemption is powerful.

From addiction to redemption, from m**h addict to worship leader, his powerful testimony is one of radical restoration after having encountered the Presence of God, and giving his life to Jesus. Today, he is a touring worship leader, songwriter, recording artist, speaker, and has been one of the prominent songwriters and voices for Iron Bell Music.

Stephen grew up the son of a traveling evangelist, but the man he knew in private and the one he knew in public, were not the same. Due to the hypocrisy he witnessed as a child, he believed Jesus was simply fantasy. As he grew into his early teens he wanted nothing to do with Christianity. At this time of his life, he fell into extreme drug addiction. Eventually, becoming a crystal m**h addict, for over 5 years. During this dark chapter, someone gave him a book about Jesus, which he miraculously accepted.

One night, at 3am, he sat in a bed reading the book, with drugs next to him on the side table. That night, as he read, he was acutely aware of the presence of God, in the room. Stephen began to have an internal dialogue with the Lord, he knew He was real but didn’t know how to quiet the life of addiction he had known for so long. In that moment, with a thought more powerful than he could ever have imagined, He felt the Lord say, “You don’t have to do it alone, because I will do it!” and in that moment, Stephen believed Him and gave his life to Christ. He found himself with a willpower not his own, and overnight, went from addiction to redemption. He had come to personally and intimately know the God that saves.

Stephen as inspired to write “Come Jesus Come” during a time of personal revival and a renewed awareness of the need for the presence of God in his life. He found himself longing for the return of Jesus and the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promises. This longing, combined with a desire to lead others into a deeper relationship with Jesus, led him to create this powerful worship song.

The history of this Irish hymn is very interesting. There are 2 parts with beautiful stories that eventually come together to create this Celtic hymn. Be Thou My Vision, may be dated back as far as the early 8th century and was written in honor of St. Patrick. When Patrick was 16 he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Ireland. He later became a Christian and also eventually escaped and returned home to his parents in England. After all that he went through, he decided that he wanted to become a missionary and serve in Ireland of all places. On Easter Sunday in 433 on Slane Hill in County Meath, St. Patrick lit candles. This was done in defiance of a decree by the High King Logaire of Tara. No one was to light a fire before the king signaled the start of the pagan spring festival which was done by lighting a fire on Tara Hill. The King was so moved by Patrick’s devotion that, even though he defied him, he was allowed to continue his work as the first Christian missionary in Ireland. A composer wrote a song in honor of St. Patricks’ heroism was called “Slane”. As for the lyrics, an Irish poet named Dallan Forgalle wrote a poem entitled, Rop tu mo Baile during the 6th century in honor of St. Patrick. Both the poem and song seemed to become forgotten over time. Almost 1500 years later, in 1905, a university student came across this poem and translated it to English. Then, in 1912, an Irish woman named Eleanor Hull set the words to music, Slane.
Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that Thou art:
Thou my best thought by day or by night,
waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Join us on Wednesdays as we look at an atheist's journey to faith and how he honestly considered the empty tomb as a cold-case detective. In this study, we will learn some basic apologetics in sharing Jesus with others.

We have children's classes open on Wednesday nights. We look forward to seeing you tonight at 6:30 pm.

Pat Barrett’s song “Morning by Morning” is a worship anthem about learning to trust God one day at a time instead of becoming overwhelmed by the future. The song centers on the idea that God’s mercy and faithfulness are renewed every morning, echoing the biblical theme from Lamentations 3:22–23: “His mercies are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

Throughout the lyrics, Barrett emphasizes daily surrender and dependence on God. Phrases like “Grace for today is all that I need” and “I will trust when I can’t see” express the tension between uncertainty and faith. The song acknowledges that life can feel overwhelming, but it encourages listeners to move “one step at a time” while trusting that God will provide strength for today and hope for tomorrow.

Barrett has shared that the song came from his own tendency to worry about the future. He described it as a reminder to stay present and to see each sunrise as evidence of God’s ongoing faithfulness. He called the song a kind of “centering prayer” meant to begin the day with trust and worship instead of anxiety.

The bridge deepens this message by confronting fear directly: “My future is secure / My Father has spoken / And He keeps His every word.” The overall meaning of the song is that believers can face uncertainty with peace because God’s character remains constant. Each morning becomes an opportunity to renew faith, gratitude, and dependence on Him.

One of our new songs is from CityAlight "His Glory and My Good". In their own words, here is their message behind it.

“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 CSB)

This is one of the most memorized verses in the Bible. It’s a call to trust that God is working for our good. For those that have a saving faith in Jesus’s death and resurrection, He is at work in our lives. And as Philippians 1:6 says it, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” But this begs the question, what is our good? Does our good equate to a lack of hardships and trials? Does our good mean riches and comforts in this life? No, the Scriptures make a clear case that sanctification is our good. Sanctification, or becoming more like Christ, is our good, and it results in God’s glory! Sanctification is not a pleasant process, but it is for our good.

The first verse of our newest song, His Glory and My Good talks about God’s Glory revealed in Jesus, and how the more we see Him in His glory the more we are satisfied. It reminds me of John Piper’s words in his book Desiring God, “God is most glorified in us, when we are most satisfied in Him.”

The second verse articulates our trust in the Lord through trials. Even when we don’t understand and even when He doesn’t answer our prayers as we think He should, we follow Jesus in faith because He is always working for His glory and our good.

The third verse of the song articulates how Jesus’s death on the cross was for our good; it was for our salvation, which brings great glory to God!

The final verse is a call to die to ourselves so that Christ might be magnified. I’m reminded of John the Baptist’s words in John 3:30, “He must become greater; I must become less.” The song lyrics say, “Would I gladly be made nothing, that Christ would be made more?”. I love that this line is stated as a question, because every time I sing it, it reminds me of my need to die to myself and carry the cross.

In the chorus of the song, we declare glory and praise to God, and we boast in Him, because we know His glory is our good! You can learn the song at home here.
