Our Outreach Team met this past Sunday after service. (Some of us were still waiting on our food in the photo.)

A recent workshop reminded us that churches do well to go out into the community rather than wait for the community to come to us. So we decided to have our outreach meeting at a local restaurant, talking about October events we can enjoy with our neighbors: a Bears-Packers / Packers-Bears game watch party and a trunk or treat.

More details about these events coming soon.

Article Title: Cultural Cultivation: Lessons Learned at the County Fair and Beyond

In mid-August, Junia and I went to the Winnebago County Fair to watch some of our Sunday School kids show their animals. It was our first time seeing any of it in person.

County fairs show up quite often in American movies and TV shows. Kids leading cattle around a ring, pigs in the barn, prize-winning cherry pies. I had seen the pictures. But standing there while our own kids walked a steer or a hog in front of a judge, and listening to them and their parents explain what they were doing and why, was something else entirely. Keeping an animal calm and moving where you want it to go turns out to be hard, and the kids are still learning it. That’s part of the point.

At one point I asked what I thought was a simple question: how do people get those big cows home, some of them over 1,300 pounds? That’s how I found out most of them don’t go home. I didn’t expect that. There was a sad part to the day I hadn’t seen coming.

The best moment came in the sheep barn. One of our older members was sitting there, and he told me he brought his own sheep to the fair nearly every year when he was growing up. So he was sitting close to the sheep, right where he’d always been. That conversation turned the day into something more than a visit to a fair. I came home knowing our church members better, young and old.

This is what cross-racial, cross-cultural ministry looks like. Back in June, a group of us made kimbap together, and for almost everyone in the kitchen it was their first time. In August, a pastor from South Korea watched steers and hogs shown at a county fair for the first time in his life. Neither of those things happens without the other person. We each brought something the other had never done. That’s how we learn about each other, and how we grow together in Jesus’ name, with a door open to everyone.

Grace and peace,
Pastor Seong

We had our second half-day program on August 4, one last get-together before the kids head back to school. What a good morning. Kids and adults all learned and played together, and the whole point was making sure everyone had a place.

The best part was playing musical chairs. We played it the regular way first, where the last one standing wins and everybody else is out. Then we tried it a different way. We still took a chair or two away each round, but this time nobody was out. Everyone instead had to figure out how to fit—scooting together, sharing seats, kids climbing onto laps, all of us squeezing in and laughing about it. You can see it in the photos. By the end there were more people than chairs and somehow everybody still had a place.

That’s what our theme has been about all along: Welcome All, Love All, Serve All. God’s salvation is for all humanity (Luke 3:6), and all means all. There’s always room for one more.

Thank you to everyone who helped and everyone who came out. We loved having you, and we can’t wait to do it again.

Fresh from our community garden—cucumbers, onions, and green beans, harvested this week and delivered to the Old Stone Church Food Pantry. Thank you to Nancy Eaton and all the Roscoe Gardening Club members who keep the garden growing and share its harvest with the community.

Every Tuesday from 2 to 5 PM, Pastor Seong holds office hours at Talcott Free Library. Meeting people where they are, rather than staying at the church, is one way our church can be more accessible to the community and part of it. If you'd like to talk, you can find him in the open seating area for a quiet chat, or step into one of the study rooms for a more private conversation.

One of his favorite spots in the library is the large print section — a simple thing that makes the library accessible to more people. In the same way, the church is called to welcome and embrace more.

Pastor Seong will be away on vacation for the next two weeks, and on Tuesday, August 4, Rockton UMC will have its Half-Day Program for children, so he'll be back at the library on Tuesday, August 11, from 2 to 5 PM.

On June 27, our youth and adult volunteers spent the day at the Jubilee Center in Rockford. We started in the kitchen chopping onions, cutting watermelon, and getting the sauce going, and by mealtime the serving line was full and over 110 neighbors had been fed.

Thanks to everyone who came out to cook, serve, and share the day. This is what growing together in service looks like.

We had such a great morning this past Tuesday with our Sunday school kids! Breakfast first, then a few icebreakers so everyone could get to know each other.

After that we did Praise & Move, lots of singing and dancing, and a Bible study on what it means to hold onto hope, even when things are hard. The kids made paper crosses for their craft, then ran around outside for some games before lunch.

Thanks to our kids and our adult helpers for making it such a fun morning.
