Unitarian Universalist Society of Rockport

Unitarian Universalist Society of Rockport Since 1821, an open and welcoming religious community acting in conscience and compassion. We believe that all people have the potential for goodness. Welcome!

If you are seeking a liberal religious home with a vital, caring, and creative congregation, enhanced by a dynamic spirit of community, we may be the church for you! Our ChaliceWe are a small but active congregation with a wide variety of people sitting in our pews. We come from a variety of religious backgrounds, range in age from very young to very old. We are single, married, widowed, and divorced; We are straight, gay, and everything in between. We revere the natural world and the diversity inherent within it. We aspire to be racially and economically diverse. At the UUSR, we value freedom of belief-there is no creed you have to recite or memorize. We concentrate on deeds not creeds. We try to follow the seven principles of our faith, as well as highlighting several Sources of our "Living tradition". We call our religion a "living tradition" because revelation is not sealed; prophets are still being born. We gather on Sunday mornings at 10:30am every week of the year. Religious Education and childcare are provided during the service, which includes readings, prayers, singing, children's stories and a sermon. The music ranges from Mozart to Brubeck; from the folk songs of James Taylor, to jazz renditions of Beatles tunes. We look forward to seeing you.

August 30th was a Sunday-Service-of-Service.

UUSR had a terrific turnout of hands to improve our building and its grounds. This D-I-Y effort expressed our deep connection with our property, and offered prime opportunity to build bonds that come from working sided by side with one another. Among the projects worked on were a complete cleanout of the kitchen, sorting what goes/stays in the attic, lots of gardening, repainting the office exterior door, and so much else.

A HUGE THANKS!! to all of you who took part!

Aug 16. Rev Mike's sermon was entitled “Sawubona”. It is a Zulu greeting that literally means “I see you.” It is a way of greeting that is different from our typical “Hi, how ya doin?” kind of greeting. It is the way we truly “see” one another when we are in community. Beautiful message for a beautiful Rockport day!

Sunday August 9. Our guest at the pulpit was Rev. Ken Reeves of Concord. He spoke eloquently on "The New Story of Nature."

"In the "old story", nature was depicted as “red in tooth and claw,” justifying its domination by people. And yet, a new story of nature is developing, supporting humanity in harmony with nature. Rev Reeves message was all about this "new story of nature", whereby our congregation learned of the intricate interconnectedness of nature, often in ways few of us can imagine. It was a fascinating story from UUSR's pulpit!

Sunday Aug 2. The message from our pulpit by Ginny was one we all can connect with, caring for the caring. Brittney Betts delivered a beautiful ballad in Spanish (and English) during offertory segment, and joined Dana Cohen for lively trumpet/trombone postludes.

A video of Headlands encore sing-along 7/25/2026. It was a shared service attended by UU members from Gloucester and Essex, a great opportunity to mingle with kinfolk from nearby communities!

Rev Duda delivered a creative and thoughtful sermon on the topic "The Problem of Evil". While we see evil abound in various facets of life today, we learned that history has shown that a loving, committed community can overcome evil.

July 19th service at UUSR. The Worship of Power was the engaging theme of Rev Parson's sermon. Caroline Haine's ukulele duet provided the service's catchy tunes.

For July 12, UUSR welcomed back to our pulpit another of our favorites, the Rev Art McDonald, retired minister of the Essex Unitarian church. Art gave a riveting and passionate talk on the topic of immigration in his own family life, while extrapolating into his lived experience engaging with immigrants from Latin America. No one paints the picture more vividly on this powerful and contemporary topic!

UUSR welcomed the duet of Madeline Downs (Violin) and Alex Weinstein (Piano) who integrated a cool jazz vibe in their performed anthems.
