“And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.””
Luke 7:12-13 NKJV
“Do not weep.” The Lord is compassionate!
The Lord saw her, He noticed her suffering and He had compassion on her. The amazing take away from this portion of scripture is that He did not only see her present suffering, He saw into her future!
The Lord had compassion on a widow whose only son had died. No doubt the son represented her safety, her income and her future lineage since she was a widow and had no other male support. In those days, widows were very vulnerable and subordinate to their male relatives. They had no way of earning money and depended solely on the generous support and protection of others. The death of her only son was such a compounded loss for this mother. But Jesus looked beyond the present and into her future and He raised the boy back to life! How amazing is that!
Friends, aren’t you just so grateful that God looks beyond our present circumstances and knows the future? He performs miracles that impact not only our present needs but our future as well! He is a God that looks compassionately upon His children and He delivers us safely through! God is faithful!
