In this week’s readings, the overwhelming presence of God meets us precisely where we are — in the wilderness, in our weakness, in a world where wheat and w**ds grow up together. Jacob falls asleep on a stone and wakes to discover that the gate of heaven was right where he was standing, because there is nowhere we can go where God is not already there, searching us out, knowing us, holding us fast in darkness and in light. Paul carries that forward: we have not received a spirit of slavery and fear, but a spirit of adoption, and the whole groaning creation strains toward the day when God’s children are fully revealed in glory. Jesus tells us to resist the anxious urge to uproot every w**d in the field — judgment belongs to God, and the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s kingdom.

This coming Sunday is the last of our time with our beloved Deacon Jeanie because she has been called by the Diocese to minister to a new parish. Please come to say your goodbyes to her and express your gratitude to her for her loving ministry. She will be greatly missed!

Paul gives voice to the anguished inner struggle we all recognize, wanting to do good yet finding evil close at hand, and then breaks through to the only answer: thanking God through Jesus Christ our Lord. It is to that same weary, burdened humanity that Jesus opens his arms, promising rest to all who take his yoke, for he is gentle and humble in heart and his burden is light. Rebekah’s story reminds us that God’s providence works through ordinary moments of faithfulness and hospitality, guiding servants and strangers toward purposes larger than they can see. May we, devoted to God with our whole heart and united to one another with pure affection, find in Christ the rest our souls are seeking.
