This is an example of two grave markers at Elmwood Cemetery. One is completely overgrown with grass. The other has been edged and cleaned. The Elmwood Cemetery Association is looking for volunteers to help with fall clean up. We are thankful for Thousand Hearts for organizing this event. If you are interested in being part of this day dedicated to edging as many gravestones as possible, a work day has been scheduled from 9am-noon on September 20th. This summer the Elmwood Cemetery Association, Rockford Area Historical Society and Jackson Piper of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War worked with the Veteran's Administration to place gravestones on Civil War veterans who did not have a military marker. Five gravestones were ordered and installed recognizing the contributions these soldiers made to their country. We thank Steve Czech, Will Czech, Michelle Leimer, Tom Leimer, Kevin Koehler, Emmy Winkelman, Jim Winkelman, and others for dedicating part of their Sunday to the placement of military markers at Elmwood Cemetery.
