When Answers Aren’t Enough
By Yvonne Morris
Key text: Isaiah 41:10
There are moments in life when the weight of suffering presses so heavily on the soul that it leaves us breathless. We search for explanations, seek counsel, and cry out in prayer, hoping to understand the reason for our trials. Yet, despite our sincere petitions, the heavens seem silent. It's in such moments that the message of the song “When Answers Aren’t Enough, There Is Jesus” becomes deeply personal.
One line from the song echoes in those dark hours:
“He is there when your heart breaks and the answer just won't come.”
It reminds us that our comfort is not found in explanations, but in a Person—Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, Sustainer, and Friend.
We must understand that God’s presence is not dependent on our understanding. He is not waiting to enter our situation once we’ve figured it out—He’s already there, holding us up with His righteous right hand. He says, “I will help thee,” and His help is often in the form of comfort, strength, and peace that surpasses understanding.
The Apostle Paul, writing in a season of affliction, testified:
“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Paul had asked for his “thorn in the flesh” to be removed, but God instead gave him grace—not an answer but a presence.
Jesus, our Emmanuel—God with us—is not only the answer to our prayers. He is the peace when the answer delays, the comfort when the pain remains, and the strength when our own fails. He is there when the doctor’s report is grim, when the child goes astray, when the job is lost, or the marriage breaks apart. When answers aren’t enough—there is Jesus.
Ellen G. White Insight:
“We are not to let the future, with its hard problems, its unsatisfying prospects, make our hearts faint, our knees tremble, our hands hang down. ‘Let him take hold of My strength,’ says the Mighty One, ‘that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me.’”
—Prophets and Kings, p. 162
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, when I don’t understand and the questions seem to outweigh the answers, help me to rest in the assurance of Your presence. Thank You for upholding me, even when I am weak. Remind me that I do not need every answer to have peace—I only need You. Be my strength, my refuge, and my faithful companion through it all. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
