Gospel of Matthew 28:1–10.

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

We will not be meeting in person today. Please take this day to practice a Sabbath to rest, reflect and be restored in the presence of Jesus. We have been finishing the sanctuary ceiling repair work from extensive winter ice damage. As a result the sanctuary is in disarray from moving tables, chairs and furniture for painting. We anticipate being able to finish the work in the coming days and be ready for Easter Sunday (April 5th).

May this prayer (Benjamin R. Cremer) guide your meditations today:

Lord Jesus,
You entered the city not with force,
but with humility.

You were praised as king,
yet you refused the power we so often chase.

Forgive us for the ways we have reshaped your kingship
into something that reflects our fears more than your love.

Open our eyes to see you clearly.

Not as we want you to be but as you truly are.

Teach us to follow you
in humility when the world rewards pride,
in mercy when the world demands vengeance,
in courage when the world is ruled by fear.

Give us the strength
to seek your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven
to lift up the lowly,
to protect the vulnerable,
to resist the ways of domination.

And when we are tempted
to trade your cross for a crown of our own making,
lead us back to you.

Our true King.
Our humble King.
Our crucified and risen King.

Amen.
