Through the centuries, the Catholic Church developed and codified a process for naming saints, known as the canonization process. Venerable Fulton J. Sheen, sixth bishop of the Diocese of Rochester, will be beatified Sept. 24. Beatification will confer on him the title “Blessed,” bringing him one step closer to possible canonization as a saint.

Bishop Bonnici of the Diocese of Rochester will celebrate a 12:10 p.m. Mass Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, to mark the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Additionally, he will be the principal celebrant and homilist for the annual First Responders Mass, set for 11:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13. Both Masses will take place at Rochester's Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Very few men have had such an impact on Christianity as St. Augustine. He was born in AD 354 in North Africa, at that time a strong and dynamic Christian region. His father was a prominent pagan, but his mother, Monica, was a devout Christian. She intended that Augustine be baptized, but in his adolescence he distanced himself from the Church and did not want to be baptized.

He found himself gradually more attracted to Christianity as he listened to the preaching of St. Ambrose, the bishop of Milan.

He was baptized by St. Ambrose in 387 and returned to North Africa in 388. In 391, while visiting the town of Hippo, he was urged by the Christian population to become a priest; he accepted, though reluctantly. In 395 he became bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine, pray for us!
