What a beautiful conference we had this past week. A special thanks to our outstanding group of presenters. Andy Root was so insightful and engaging in what is meant when we use the term secular. John Barton gave us a surprising and hopeful picture of the possibilities for inter-religious peace building. Janet Kellogg Ray helped us see both the roots of the perceived conflict between faith and science, particularly among evangelicals, as well as suggesting ways forward. Jerry Taylor and Sara Barton took us up with their preaching. Sara's "Oof, eyes are hard," will stay with me for a long time, along with Jerry's prophetic word against Christian nationalism. Our spark talks were brilliant and diverse. Thanks Tiffany Dahlman, Mark Manry, Chris Cobbler, and Cheryl Russell for putting hands, feet, and hearts (even trees) to work in service of our theme.
A special thanks to the Outreach Band for their brilliant performances of songs by Madison Cunningham, Over the Rhine, U2, and the beautiful debut song by Kalita McClure. FTR, Jessica Filipiak should be doing this as a pro. Beatrice Cox brought so much to the band this year with out of this world guitar playing. And Cole McClure kept the beat and Katelyn Brackney added texture with her vocals. They made Passages a great show.
I owe a huge thanks to Julayne Hughes for her devotion to Streaming, for making sure everything comes off. And a special thanks this year to Davis Hutson who came back to do lighting and sound. Who knows how we will manage without him, but it won't be with the combination of skill and care he brings. And a big thanks to Grant, Cole, and Kayce at Stacks Creative for streaming Streaming.
My heart is full with gratitude.
If you couldn't make it to this year's event, you could still experience it through video. As soon as we add some production to the presentations, they will be available for $50 at rcu.edu/streaming.
STREAMING: MISSION IN A SECULAR AGE About Charles Taylor, the renowned philosopher, painstakingly traces a shift in Western society over a 500-year period that moved from a presumption of belief to one of doubt, from an enchanted world to a disenchanted one, from a porous self to a buffered self.
