The Revival Chronicles | Episode 2
Most Christians have heard of the Azusa Street Revival.
Few know the humble man God used to ignite it.
He had only one functioning eye, was born to formerly enslaved parents, faced constant racial discrimination, and was once locked out of the very church that invited him to preach.
Yet God used him to spark one of the most influential revivals in modern Christian history.
His name was William J. Seymour.
Born on May 2, 1870, in Centerville, Louisiana, Seymour grew up in poverty during one of the most difficult periods in American history. As a young man, he contracted smallpox, leaving him blind in one eye and with permanent facial scars.
To many, he looked like someone life had overlooked.
But heaven had another plan.
While living in Houston, Texas, Seymour enrolled in a Bible school led by Charles Parham. Because segregation laws were enforced, he was not allowed to sit inside the classroom with the white students.
Instead, he listened to the lessons from the hallway outside the door.
Imagine that.
The man who would later influence millions of Christians around the world wasn't even allowed a seat in class.
In 1906, Seymour accepted an invitation to preach in Los Angeles. After he taught that believers should seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the church leaders rejected his message and literally locked the doors of the church against him.
Many would have concluded they had missed God.
Seymour didn't.
Instead, he gathered a few believers in a small house on Bonnie Brae Street. They prayed earnestly, seeking nothing but God's presence.
Then revival broke out.
The meetings became so crowded that people filled the streets outside. Eventually, they moved into an abandoned building at 312 Azusa Street.
What happened there changed church history forever.
People from different races, denominations, social classes, and nations worshipped together in a time when racial segregation divided America.
Many testified of healing.
Lives were transformed.
People came from around the world to witness what God was doing, and many returned to their own countries carrying the Pentecostal message with them. Historians widely recognize the Azusa Street Revival as the beginning of the modern Pentecostal movement.
But perhaps Seymour's greatest miracle wasn't what happened in the services.
It was his humility.
Before many meetings, he would kneel in prayer with his head inside an empty wooden crate, seeking God's face instead of public recognition.
He refused to make the revival about himself.
He wanted Jesus Christ to receive all the glory.
William J. Seymour went home to be with the Lord on September 28, 1922.
He never became wealthy.
He never sought fame.
But through one surrendered life, God touched the nations.

• Never allow rejection to make you abandon God's calling.
• God often chooses people the world overlooks.
• Prayer is the birthplace of genuine revival.
• Humility can carry an anointing that talent alone never will.
• When Christ is exalted above personalities, revival becomes possible.
The world saw a poor, one-eyed Black preacher.
God saw the man who would help ignite a global revival.
