The Holy Spirit Doesn't Come To Make You Better

Church, here's what I want us to understand: the Holy Spirit isn't filling us to make us better people.

He's filling us to make us different people. He didn't come to make bad people good. He came to make dead people live.

He came to make us live differently, see the world differently, speak differently, act differently, and even schedule our lives differently.

So what kind of person does He want us to be? One that's full of power, full of boldness, a witness, one that brings the kingdom of God.

But sometimes we miss this, because the message we hear is that Jesus just came to make us a little better, help us discover who we were meant to be, make life easier, or help our kids behave.

We pick up all these strange ideas, and some of it is because the church has taught this stuff. No. That's not why He came.

Jesus came so we could die to ourselves, live in power in Him, and change the world, not simply make our own lives a little bit better.

So what's the message of the kingdom we see in Acts? Be different. Not so we can wear it like a badge of honor or earn some Christian gold star. He came to bring His kingdom through us.

Is The Good News Still Good When You're In The Hospital Room?

In our culture, hope feels cheap, because hope is really nothing more than a wish. "I hope my team wins before I die." "I hope they say yes when I ask them out."

But Christian hope is different than that.

Hebrews six says, "God also bound Himself with an oath, so that those who receive the promise could be perfectly sure He would never change His mind. So God has given us both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls."

So hope is an anchor. It centers us, it grounds us, and it steadies us. But if it's going to make a difference, it can't just sound good. It actually has to be good.

And it doesn't matter if the good news sounds good in this moment. It matters if it's still good when we're sitting in the hospital room, in divorce court, or when we've lost the job.

When we've prayed and fasted and nothing changes, it's fair to ask: is hope still an anchor when there's no change, and when we resort to the same unhealthy habits we always have? Yes. Hope is still an anchor.

What really does it is verse 18. A promise is, "I'll do this for you, I'll give you what you need." But an oath is bigger: "I give you all of Myself." When we marry, when we stand in court, we give an oath.

God has given us both. His promise says, "I'll give you what you need." His oath says, "I will give you Myself." So God promises to give us what we need, but most importantly, who we need.

You've Been Asking God For The Wrong Thing

After the Golden Calf, one of Israel's worst moments, God is still talking to Moses like a close friend.

They're about to enter a land they've never seen, and Moses could ask for anything: direction, strategy, victory, blessing.

He asks for none of it. For the first time in all of Genesis and Exodus, someone asks to know God.

People had cried out for deliverance. They'd been blessed. They'd witnessed His power at the Red Sea. But no one had asked to know God Himself.

Because there's a difference between knowing what God does and knowing His ways.

Moses had already seen the miracles. He'd been used to perform them. But he wanted something deeper: to understand the character and heart behind God Himself.

What he wanted more than God's power was God's presence.

Most of us want the power. Maybe a raise, nice weather, some relief for the lower back. And that's human. But Moses shows us there's a better ask.
