You've Been Asking God For The Wrong Thing

After the Golden Calf, one of Israel's worst moments, God is still talking to Moses like a close friend.

They're about to enter a land they've never seen, and Moses could ask for anything: direction, strategy, victory, blessing.

He asks for none of it. For the first time in all of Genesis and Exodus, someone asks to know God.

People had cried out for deliverance. They'd been blessed. They'd witnessed His power at the Red Sea. But no one had asked to know God Himself.

Because there's a difference between knowing what God does and knowing His ways.

Moses had already seen the miracles. He'd been used to perform them. But he wanted something deeper: to understand the character and heart behind God Himself.

What he wanted more than God's power was God's presence.

Most of us want the power. Maybe a raise, nice weather, some relief for the lower back. And that's human. But Moses shows us there's a better ask.

Your Soul Needs Reminders of What Is True

God Can Handle Your Honesty

The Psalms remind us we feel the full range of human emotions, and that's okay.

The writers of the Psalms don't hold back. They tell God exactly what's going on.

There are psalms of lament that ask, "Where are You, God?" Lament is a form of prayer, and we've lost the art of it.

There are imprecatory psalms full of anger, demanding justice. There are psalms of confession: "I've messed up, God. Cleanse me, redeem me, restore me." And there are psalms of praise: "You are good, God."

So we don't have to have our feelings neat and tidy with God. He wants us raw and real.

Telling truthfully is a sign of real relationship. We get honest with the people we're actually close to.

Some of us have never been honest with God in our lives. We think we have to show up perfect.

But if we want to go deeper with God, we have to get closer to God. And if we want to get closer to God, we have to get honest with Him.
