Do you know what distractions are and what they symbolize? The true meaning of distractions from God is anything that shifts your focus, attention, obedience, or devotion away from God's will, God's voice, and God's purpose for your life.
Spiritually, distractions are not always bad things. Often, they are things that become more important to us than our relationship with God. A distraction can be worry, fear, relationships, success, social media, money, past hurts, unforgiveness, or even being overly busy with good things while neglecting the things of God.
In Scripture, distractions are often used by the enemy to divert believers from their God-given assignment. Peter is a powerful example in Matthew 14. As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he walked on water. The moment he focused on the wind and the waves, he began to sink. The storm wasn't his problem, the distraction was.
Spiritually, distractions can:
Cause us to lose focus on God's promises.
Delay our growth and spiritual maturity.
Create doubt where faith once existed.
Cause us to miss divine opportunities.
Drain our peace and replace it with anxiety.
The enemy understands that if he cannot stop God's plan, he will often try to distract us from it. That's why not every distraction comes in the form of temptation. Sometimes it comes in the form of drama, offense, confusion, busyness, or unnecessary battles that consume our energy and attention.
The lesson is simple: Whatever consistently takes your eyes off God, your purpose, and your peace may be a distraction.
The spiritual antidote to distraction is found in Hebrews 12:2: "Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith." When we keep our eyes on Christ, we are less likely to be moved by the winds and waves around us.
In essence, a distraction is anything that makes you focus more on the storm than on the Savior. When your focus remains on God, distractions lose their power.
